I don’t know if maybe I am shortcutting the process, but do you see all that wood/leaf litter *under* those branches? The top inch or three under the loose leaves is already years and years of composted material. When needed, I rake up that stuff and work it into my garden and it grows food like crazy! My woodlot is primarily hardwoods and I don’t know if that makes a significant difference from a mix of soft & hard wood trees.

From a former member of all affected groups — if they were to call me up, then that could only mean they had exhausted all possible better options, in which case, I would be the last man standing and would thereby be authorized to negotiate a truce…

Seriously, if they are all the way down to calling up troops from the “spare-parts” Army, they are either desperate or un-serious about the goals of the intended mission.

In this case, I’m going with un-serious…

On the slightly brighter side, as opposed to embracing the suck somewhere in the sandbox, anyone called up to Finland, Germany or Poland can at least expect the availability of decent native beer & food without having to stop & clear IED’s along the way!

Another example is I get “Posted An Update” notifications from users I don’t “follow” and have no “connection”. I get “Posted An Update” most frequently from the user, @HorseRangeMtnFarm. I’m sure they are nice folks, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out how Freesteading’s notification functionality decides I should get notified every time they “Post An Update”.

I’ve gone through the settings and should only be getting notifications that directly apply to me (account stuff, direct replies, follows, etc), but the notification function on the site is a hot mess. It’s like the cross-walk button on a street corner, a “nuttin’ button” — you can press it until the cows come home and it ain’t doing nothing!

Maybe you will have better luck. Click on your user name (upper right corner) and click “Account” in the pop-up. You should see “Notification Settings” after that. Good Luck!!

Tornadoes and Hurricanes. They come around every year. It sort of dominoed from there.

As much as a quick ending would be preferable, I tend to think it will be a loooooong drawn out fizzle. It won’t end as our favorite post-apoc novel describes and we won’t descend into WROL. “Normal” will just gradually degrade and we will just keep acclimating as things gradually worsen. The “boiled frogs” analogy.

I doubt there will be a civil war unless at least two or three contiguous states secede (got to have some place for sanctuary and the *massive* logistical support needed). But on the other hand, there were over 2000 domestic bombings in a relatively short period in the USA back in the 70’s. While it was a sort of guerilla warfare, it was too easy for “the authorities” to label the offenders criminals and terrorists and the vast majority of the sheeple accepted the explanation. “We The People” are too willingly compliant.

I believe the only way to last in the evolving abusively political world is to rely on govt as little as possible, deny the govt every legal penny in taxes possible, and do as much as you can to be self sufficient. Be a “prepper”. No one can be 100% self-sufficient, but you should strive to be as independent as you can manage. The more self-sufficient you are, the less you care about “their” power and the less control “they” have.

In addition to beans, bandaids, bullets and water-purification…

Tools to work your ground (hoes, rakes, shovels, fertilizer, seeds, etc).

Tools to work wood (saws, chisels, hammers, nails, screws, etc.).

Tools to work machines (basic mechanic set).

More than one pair of good, leather boots THAT CAN BE RE-SOLED (buy extra soles now or learn how to re-sole with tire tread – thanks youtube!).

Sewing notions. Fabric by the bolt (denim, etc) unless you want to wear shirts and pants made out of curtains and the like. Sewing patterns, or carefully disassemble old shirt/pants to make your own patterns.

You want a lifetime supply of food? A little bit at a time, amass canning jars and lids (with a large percentage of reuseable-lids) -or- fill up the available jar storage space you have. Can’t have “too much”, you can only have “too little”. Learn how to grow food and preserve it. How many jars? A rough rule of thumb average is eating two quarts, or four pints, per day for two people (some days more, some days less, depends on what you’re cooking).

I will readily agree — it all seems absolutely overwhelming. You may be thinking, “It’s too much, I can’t do this”. Just pick one thing and start. It gets easier and becomes more “normal” as you go.

I think I’ve found part of the problem — whenever you join a group/community/whatever, by default Freesteading automatically enables the “Subscribe” bell for that group!!! Freesteading automatically opts you in to a notification subscription when you join the group. You have to manually go back through, open each group page, and opt out by toggling the “Bell” icon to off. The bell icon is at the top/right of the group page title.

That seems to have no effect.

Today I have more notifications that my settings indicate I should not be getting. The notifications are for “posted an update” and “started a discussion”. My member name is not mentioned in any of the notifications, nor are they replies to a post or comment I’ve made.

My notification settings are as follows…

Notification settings where “Web” is the only option selected:
A member mentions you using “@JD-in-GA
    Your password is changed
A member replies to your post or comment
    A member starts following you
    You’re promoted in a group
You receive a new invite to join a group
A member requests to join a group you manage
Your request to join a group is rejected
You receive a new connection request
    Your connection request is accepted

Notification settings where *no* option is selected / all disabled:
New post by a member you’re following
The details of a group you manage are updated
New post in a group you’re subscribed to
New discussion in a group you’re subscribed to
New meeting or webinar is scheduled in one of your groups
New discussion in a forum you’re subscribed to
New reply in a discussion you’re subscribed to

Freesteading’s notification functionality is a hot mess! I was getting blasted with messages that had over 1400 members listed… I had to leave the groups to stop them.

CA can’t be fixed. Sane folks will just get outvoted by the wokies. The best recourse, if you can manage it, is to move. Call 1-800-GO-U-HAUL.

If that is not an option, then as they say south of the border, “what can not be remedied must be endured”.

The depth of the micro-management CBDC will allow is not something easily conveyed to the average person. It’s like asking them to visualize $30 trillion dollars in debt… Most can even imagine it.

So, the Govt will not be able to ban other currencies (digital or physical). In fact, they *need* other currencies for the world to keep working. We will just have to wait to see what the options will be.

I expect it will have to be easier to use than the average DeFi Crypto where you have digital wallets and have to navigate crypto exchanges and all that. There’s a significant percentage of the population that struggles with far less (ahem) “technical stuff”. Like George Carlin said, think about how dumb the *AVERAGE* person is; then realize half the country is dumber than that. So whatever they come up with, will have to be as easy to use as a paper dollar or folks will avoid it like the plague and it could ignite a political firestorm that is “bad for reelections”.

    Opinions will vary.

Decentralize crypto was designed from the start to route around govt dictates like that. Why would the govt prosecute someone for transferring CDBC or Dollars from one bank (OCONUS or otherwise) to another bank? Now it may have changed among any number of other currencies along the way, digital or fiat, but when crossing into the US regulatory jurisdiction, it does not have to be anything other than what is authorized by law.

The point is that USA regulators are powerless in many exchanges across the globe and will remain so, even if there is a “one world govt”. Good luck getting 100% participation in the regulatory schemes. Even US politicians need *somewhere* on the globe to facilitate their graft and corruption — especially since their current favorite (Ukraine) is under threat of being taken away from them.

And the US Dollar itself is based on nothing except “the full faith and credit of the USA” and in practical use, is only worth what the market agrees it is worth. Just like DeFi Crypto.

    Gold/silver aren’t feasible as currency.

So here we all are… Exchanging currencies backed by nothing other than “the eye of the beholder”.

I don’t think they will blanket outlaw all crypto except theirs. Think about fiat currency — the dollar competes with the Pound, Euro, Yen, etc and Americans are free to speculate/trade those currencies as they like. What I expect they may do is declare all “official” govt business be conducted in US CBDC/Dollars (paying taxes, fees fines, etc).

But even if they did declare other crypto illegal, look at Ripple (XRP) which is currently illegal to trade in the US due to the (I think misguided) SEC lawsuit. It has not stopped Americans from trading in XRP, they just have to do it “off shore”. If they want to repatriate those funds, they simply exchange XRP into any other allowable digital or fiat currency before transferring it back to their bank accounts.
