I used vinyl opaque roofing/siding sheets. Kept out the coons and possums.

I’m also in my first year with comfrey. No flowering yet though. What is the normal time to flowering? I have chopped a few leaves off of the largest plants and put them in the compost pile in the chickens pen. We’re gone the next day.

Took me a while to find where ours were hiding them. As soon as I gathered them, they went back to laying in the nest.

Lots of good old fashioned ways to do things that many have probably forgotten, or never knew. Hope this thread inspires people to pick them up if they can still be found. A wealth of information!

Love hearing all of this reminiscing. We live in a house that was built in 1795. Going underneath for the purchase inspection and seeing the log floor joists, seeing the 8” thick outside walls, makes me try to imagine what it was like. I do enjoy the modern conveniences, but we try to experience a simpler life as much as possible.

I’m good with it as is. Like looking at all of the posts and different ideas.

Starting the year with toooooo many projects on the books. Wife priorities are always priority, put together new smoker I got for Christmas for all of the pork we got from two pigs we raised last year, dam in the spring fed creek on our homestead to raise fish, continuing to gather firewood for our heat, plan the summer garden, plan for the food forest, etc.
All good stuff, just need to prioritize and focus.

Tomorrow a son and spouse here for two days. Christmas PM with a son and family here. Next week in Denver with a daughter and family over New Years. Difficult but a lot of family time. I’ll take the difficult 😊

The speaker was recommending #1 white mulberry #2 hybrid poplar #3 hybrid something that I can’t remember (sorry). He said basically that the white mulberry could provide 100% feed for most ruminates.

Built be a Methodist preacher who settled 1600 acres. Unfortunately, it is down to sitting on 1.1 acres. He built this house using materials from his land. First stick built house in the area. Made 6” walls so didn’t need insulation. Hoping to add solar electric and hot water.
