Love the feedback feature as well as the whole website….thank you for all of you who put this together. It would be most helpful to indicate your growing hardiness zone when providing feedback, as for what works in one zone may not be beneficial in another and there can be several different zones within a state or county. Thanks for consideration!

    Suggestion

#1 How about adding City and County along with State so that members can find closer individuals easier.

I nearly settled on asking you where to find this field, until I discovered it on the “about you” tab.

Of the first two profiles that I clicked on, one is that of a ‘inaugural day user’ of this website who lists a location that is improbably over 5,000 miles away from mine. That’s their prerogative, I’m sure, especially if they are concerned with privacy, but I feel this obfuscation of actual location is counter to the goal of enabling F2F/IRL meetings as a community layer, rather than the other pathway downward, to this being ‘just another online forum’.

Just by looking at others’ profiles, I realize that I haven’t stumbled across certain data fields, but I in turn had something that looked like a free-form essay area, and I treated it as such.

I’m still metaphorically poking around here and punching buttons and pulling levers, just to see what they do.

Bold move inviting in the Good Idea Fairy!

Since you asked, the ability to “like” comments would be cool, as well as the ability to “dislike” posts and comments.

Internet points are silly, but the ratio can be a great way to assess how people feel about different ideas.

Also, I’m not seeing an “off” option for individual notifications, only “email” and “web.” Is that in the works?

Lastly, I’m having trouble understanding the the implementation of forums here. I get having groups centered around certain people (though I hope that more will be created around topics in the future), and I understand the Q&A feature being linked to individual groups, but it seems to me that the forum portion might be more helpful and accessible if wasn’t fractured and compartmentalized between separate groups.

It just seems to me that once the activity feed becomes more curated and only shows updates in groups to which a user is subscribed, we might miss out on all sorts of useful information posted in groups to which we aren’t subscribed. The current model would make sense to me if this were reddit or communities.win where every topic under the sun has a home, but since this entire platform has the same basic theme, there’s bound to be plenty of overlap in the topics discussed in different groups.

Whether or not the above idea are considered or implemented, I love it here and look forward to expressing my appreciation via a paid subscription when available. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen!

    Good Idea Fairy out.

How about technical discussions for software and data engineers. Software engineers need to learn new app building technologies and we can all help QA new features.

The only thing about this idea is that random tech and data engineers are why we left other social media sites in the first place. It’s best if only a few trusted people have that much power on this site.

How about you set up a sub-group (class) of users to participate in BETA testing new features before you roll them out? Many of us old tech birds would love to help.

You will definitely need to set up criteria for prioritizing all your bugs, enhancements, features etc….might be nice to allow users to submit suggestions into these buckets as well.

Here are some nice to haves:

    1) Allow the user the ability to drag the menu bar from the left to the right-hand side of the screen.

    2) Allow the user to “turn off” their “active” light on their profile pic (Online, available, brb, etc…)

    3) For those who are willing and ready – allow users to be added on a list now for email notification of the roll-out for the VIP Patron Program

Thanks for this site! It’s fabulous! Can we add a Ham Radio group? I’m new to Ham but know that many of us will have limited service in our off grid properties and having a way to communicate will be vital. Having a group here to help others learn and connect would be an amazing resource. Keep up the good work and God Bless your efforts!

Ham radio is good, but how about a broader category for communications that includes ham radio, GMRS, FRS, CB, private messaging and email apps, and so on? I think each of these has a place, especially after an SHTF or TEOTWAWKI event.

Starting a “Communications” discussion in the forum section of the “Survival” group might be a good place to talk about this until more groups become available.

I was thinking the same thing, more or less. I think that would be a good place for such a discussion.

I agree, An Amateur Radio Forum (aka HAM RADIO), or as others mentioned, a Communication Forum would be great! I recommend everyone that is going off grid to get a minimum of one radio of each type and obtain a license for each type that requires one. The FCC recently dropped the cost of a GMRS license to $35. It used to be $75. Though Amateur Radio was free, they now charge $35 for the 10 year license. It is still reasonable. I’ll gladly pay $35 when I go for my Extra license.

Another idea: letting folks know about what tools are available in an area for rent or loan.
I’m thinking about the little poultry processing drums that pluck a chicken in record time, rather than pulling them by hand. If you knew where one was in your area, you could bring your small flock out to that farm or you might hie off with it for a weekend. One that was twenty miles away would be feasible, one that is in Cairo Egypt wouldn’t. If it was ‘for pay’ then it would fall under the marketing and entrepreneurship tabs.

For instance, I have a farrier family in Hickman County that nearly all the veterinarians use for their horses in the Middle Tennessee region, as the father/son pair can ably handle shoeing and veterinary care for hostile animals that aren’t safe for a standard veterinary tech to be anywhere near them. They travel further for larger groups of animals, like the stables kept by the likes of Anheuser-Busch.

I-bet-I’ll-wager that there are other, similarly fungible roving goods and services that would be very useful to know about , for each region of homesteaders.

Just ran into a family of folks in White Bluff that have been in the business of making Molasses for over a hundred years; if you haven’t seen their name on a bottle label or had a relative grow up in the area you wouldn’t know anything about them. A lot of the Plain Folk, Amish, Mennonites, are the same way. You could be hurting for rough cut lumber and not know anything about them through conventional adverts, it’s all word of mouth.

This might be a good platform for such quiet small family businesses that are not of the media-savvy “influencer” type, if the barrier to entry is low enough.

It would be nice to have State groups for Australia, although I understand that this would apply to all countries and represents a big chunk of work. Another option perhaps would be to allow private groups to be created so we can invite people that we meet within our locale. This site is a great idea and I’m looking forward to see it progress. Thanks.

There is an Australia sub-group (and some others) in the International community group.

Thanks Farm-Ranch-Homestead, yes I’m a member of that group. Aus is quite large it would be nice to be able to get a little more granular in the context of discussions, activities, events etc.

Maybe kick off a thread for your state in the forum section of the Australia group? People in the US could do the same for counties in their state.

Cheers CD_Gray, I’m not sure how this would work, especially long term. The Australia group is already a sub-group and from what I can see there is no way to create ‘threads’. It seems you can post a question and have many replies, but this would become unmanageable when considering the variety of discussions that would occur at a state level. Anyway, thanks for your help, I’ll work with what is available and look forward to watching this community grow 🙂

    1. When I used the link to the feedback page, it says 404 not found.

    2. Like many people, I work 2 jobs, so your employment section on the profile page doesn’t fit well. Maybe have 2nd job box with same info to complete? Currently, my attempt to complete looks like this:

Job Title Seasonal Membership Processing, Arbor Day Foundation, 2016-Present

Company Seasonal Accounting Data Entry, United Way, 2017-Present

    3. Please consider adding an additional employment/comments area on the profile page for people who change careers. The information I would like to add:

Executive Assistant at financial institution/brokerage, 10 years. Office Manager for church, 9 years,
Accounting Clerk at community college, 6 years. Self-Employed as Remote/Virtual Assistant, 4
years, Ceramics Creator/Craft Show Vendor, 15 years. PT Auctioneer Clerking, 20 years.

    Thank you 😀

When I click the little bell to check my notifications, it always jumps me to the top of the discussion instead of where the notification is so I can respond to it. Digging through pages of discussion to find why I was notified is time consuming. 🙁

I’ve invited several likeminded individuals via email to set up an account here… but I’m kind of disappointed that it doesn’t automatically friend request them. Once they are set up, they have to look for me, which makes it a bit difficult to connect. Would love for this to be automatic since I don’t know what screenname they select to look for them after the fact unless we use a different way to connect to share that info. Thank you!
