Hello to everyone from rural South Central PA! Decided to try this site upon recommendation from LFTN podcast. I am excited to interact with like minded folks and share the knowledge I have acquired over the years but more so continue the lifelong journey of learning. I am still clawing my way out of the corporate world but my family and I are living our dreams on a very active homestead. This coming weekend will bring a hog slaughter and processing and next week it looks like the temps will have the maples flowing again. God bless and I look forward to the community here!

I’m new to this and I’m having trouble finding how this works. I can see portions of a message sent to me but not the whole message. If I click on view messages nothing happens. I can delete a message or mark as read (I suppose; haven’t tried). Please help!
I’ve sent feedback or something like that but get no response 😐

When on my tablet, I turn it to landscape to read the full message. Welcome to Freesteading.

I’ve been a member a little while now. I still can’t seem to navigate very well. lol
I have been (nearly) off grid for 8 years, in North Texas.
We live on family land that has NO ground water so we catch rainwater and haul in water for our daily needs, saving our rainwater for the garden. We have cows and goats that drink from stock tanks. We live in a small home (before it was a “thing”) and also work off the homestead. As you all know, there is NEVER enough time to get our work done!
I’ve been hoping to find someone in a similar environment as ours who has tried “wicking garden beds” they sound like they may be the answer to my garden water issues. Anybody tried them?

Hello, I’m from northern WA and generally don’t like social media because I’m fairly private and I don’t trust easily (bad past experience) but I’m loyal when my trust is finally earned. I’m here to learn from others how to get out and stay out of the “system” as much as possible and protect my kids. My husband isn’t as far along yet on the diy journey but baby steps at least are a step forward. He has always lived in a city but I feel like I was born in the wrong century. These last few years have really been eye opening for us. My dream is to someday move out of the city to property but for now I will learn and do all I can on our ~1/4 acre. My garden (herb, veg and fruit) gets bigger every year (lawn is less and less of a priority) and I’m learning real skills like herbalism for natural healing (lost any trust in mainstream med when my mom was damaged a number of years ago), real soap making, traditional cooking, all types of preserving etc. I’d like to add backyard chickens next. Advice and tips on getting out/doing more on a single income are also welcome.

Hi Everybody,
(Repost: sorry, originally made this post as update to feed instead of reply to this discussion – newbie to social platforms – my wife is better at all this than me.)
First, Thank you Tag and Bee for creating this and all the work you put into it!! We’re so glad to have found this site from watching Self Reliance Festival replays on Nicole Sauce’s LFTN channel.
My wife and I are currently doing the “covert” suburban homesteading thing in Beaverton, OR (20 min. West of Portland) but actively looking to relocate. We’ve spent the last five or six years intentionally learning skills for our future country homestead since we both grew up “city” .
Strong believers in Personal Responsibility, Self-Reliance, and Freedom. Private by nature, neither of us have been active (or comfortable) on social media in the past, but we hope to meet like minded people here and locally in person.
Have a great day All!
Kevin

Hello, I’m from Pennsylvania not yet free… But when the LORD open the door I’ll praise dance to build my garden. The church garden and a few side yard will do. I’m totally behind due to a knee injury but that’s okay the cool weather is breaking. Drop some seeds do what you can do. Just really want to say thank everyone who make the YouTube videos they open my eyes to a lot of things.

Hello all! I’m Julie, a 26 year old from Maine. I’m not new to homesteading, however due to new housing going in around us and zoning changes, we had to get rid of almost all of our livestock (could keep chickens.) My kids still miss the goats.
We are moving to a much more rural area, building a house ourselves, and slowly getting back to homesteading after four years of overtime work at a soul sucking job.
My goal is to not only be self sufficient with our food, but to also earn enough from market gardening and handmade goods to pay bills.
It’s a long journey ahead, but I’m looking forward to all of it. 😁

I’m sorry that they would not “marry you in” as you were already established w/your livestock.
Optimism will pave the way, even when the road seems challenging. My husband and I lived in ME for about a year. At the time jobs were scarce, hence why we are in NH.
We are in a transition stage, where my husbands’ new job w/SIG, values him and their employees. It is over an hour drive for him, so our goal is to find a new home w/more acreage (we don’t need tons, maybe 5-10) so that we can be more rural. We could move to ME or stay in NH. Then again, I’m not really sure I desire to move to the coast, while preferring more of a wooded/wildlife setting.
Welcome!!

Hi, I’m Dan. I live in TX. I’m currently upping my skills with bowery abd fletching. I’ve been bowhunting for several years now and am going to try to get at least one deer with homemade bow and arrows this upcoming season. The government can never ban sticks, rocks and grass. People have been doing this for thousands of years.

Not new to the website, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been on it. But finally found the time to download the app since I’m still recovering from surgery (nasal lift, major jaw bone grafting due to the roots of my tooth to penetrate my nasal membrane). I’m a native from NE Florida, have a place in the city that I’m transitioning from back to my family homestead about 15 miles away where I grew up. The same house my dad nailed me by my pants to the roof decking, so I wldnt be running everywhere picking blackberries, where I cleaned / smoothed the mortar joints and helped lay tile. I was 3 when my parents bought the property, 5 when my dad started construction on the weekends hauling water in 55gal drums to mix mortar to first build the barn, then saved money for the first well to go in, the house and then the second well. I recall my mom checking out books from the library, reading them and then explaining to my dad what needed to be done. Sadly, when I was in high school my father was killed in a construction accident and never really got to enjoy what his callused hands and 8th grade education built. 2017 I quit my job to take care of my mom (I told her I was retiring, but that wasnt the case) 2018 she passed, with her wish for the house to remain in the family. So I sold one property took everything I had and bought out my siblings and trying to move back home. Sometimes seems like one thing after another, both well pumps / motors went out, replaced the house roof and both well house roofs, finshed trimming out buildings in cedar like my dad had started, lighting fixed (bypassed balists) changed to LEDs, 6 ft perimeter fence up, just need to do gate fronts and run 3 stand barb thru barb arms across the back, and change the glass out in the windows and get the mechanisms fixed, then hopefully it will be move in time. Sorry for the long post fellow freesteaders, I can talk about the history of my homestead forever… lol! Happy to finally have the app, hopefully I ll be able to check in here more!

Good evening future friends! My name is Chris and I’m currently living in northwest Florida. I’ve decided to get my butt in to gear and start taking real action towards living my dream of true freedom. I’ll be asking loads of questions and learning everything I can from anyone willing to share their knowledge.

Good evening. My name is David and I’m an….. wait…. wrong group! 😀
I’m 47 and live in south Texas. 2 years ago my wife and I sold our home in the city, bought an RV, then patiently waited till we could find a place in the country. A year and a half later, we found a small foreclosed place in the country where we can’t see our closest neighbors. I’ve played around with solar for 10 years and currently have our shed(my workshop) 100% off grid. In my spare time I invent things, build contraptions, repair broken things, do general handyman things(I remodeled our foreclosed home myself), and I volunteer at a local food pantry. I also run a small (400 subscribers) YouTube channel where I catalog some of my builds. All of that while battling Parkinson’s disease! Staying busy is the key, but the most important part is keeping my focus on my Lord, savior, and father above, Jesus Christ!

Reading this has actually made my day. It is so easy to forget how similar our paths in life are. It is precious to me, to read peoples stories, when they are not ashamed to admit how many times they have been bashed against the rocks, and fought their way to the surface, for one more gulp of air. Great Intro. Please write a book, or make a podcast! Love, kelly

I’ve absolutely loved reading your story. Thank you so much for sharing! I can relate so much to your stories of friends and trusting and losing trust over time in your friends… and truthfully, it’s been my fear all along when discussing building an off-grid community with friends! I’d absolutely love to see what you’ve built at some point, and even more, I love that it was possible for you!

Hey, this is miss woody, thanks for the introduction sojourner, interesting past you’ve had. Yes, I have a real name, but as you said we humans are very untrusting, besides all my friends actually know me as miss woody. I’ve been here for about a week and have learned so much already, seems like a great group of people. I have wanted to homestead for years and was finally blessed with almost 3 acres. I’ve been a nurse for over 30 years and am so tired of it. I’m an army vet (cook), divorced, mom of two grown children and grandma to 5 precious souls. I’ve been a Christian since 2006. Looking forward to learning from all you folks.
-
Wowza! I’m really interested in hearing about your underground greenhouse! Very cool!!!
-
I have a buddy that has a broken ” picker” he has a 100 percent fail rate.
-
misswoody, your right alot of people have become untrusting. I think so many of us have been deceived so many times. Alot of us so called boomers used to help others freely but you have to always take risk these days even to open the door to a stranger or to help someone broke down beside the road. With all the fake news and the constant backstabbing from our leaders it forces people to trust no one.
-
😊 I love the Beatles. The messages in their lyrics are so vividly clear

Thank you! I failed to mention, I’m a born and raised Missourian, mostly from KC north of the river. Spent many a vacation in ozarks. When my husband retired we moved to NW Missouri. He passed away 1 1/2 yrs ago while we were at the lake. I cannot wait to get settled in the new place.
-
I use to be “one of those”! I have fully recovered and made my final “pick” nearly 9 years ago! It’s a hard habit to break!
-
Welcome Joel!! I live with my husband here in NH, USA
Many are on the same journey as yourself. FREEDOM begins when we make a choice to be self-sufficient.
