Suggestions for where to get Comfrey

Hi all. I’m planting a small orchard and want to include Comfrey around the trees and along the border. Not a true permaculture situation, but as close as my husband will think looks nice. The local stores do not sell Comfrey, and Etsy is a bit pricey for the quantity I want to get. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Agree… Billy (Perma Pastures Farm) has some great root cuttings for sale.

There’s also the option of just buying the seeds from multiple seed companies.

I have not heard of anyone having success with seeds. i tried a few years ago with no success. go with cuttings or roots.

It’s taken me most of the summer but I have comfrey from seeds. It’s a very belaboring process and at least for the seeds I have, the germination rate is about 25%. That said, if I didn’t have the time cuttings is way better and faster.

We bought the root stock from Perma Pasture and planted them out. I highly recommend buying from them.

They will send you the instructions for planting and it is also the variety you can feed to your chickens/livestock. My chickens love it!!

Yeah, what where you plant it because they will help themselves to it if you let them. Haha

I’ve also bought cuttings from Permapasture Farms and they came up nicely. They were out of stock when I first wanted get them, though, and I bought crowns on Etsy. I figured I’d have nice sized plants sooner with crowns. All are doing well and the plants from cuttings are trying to catch up with those from crowns.

Perma pastures! We bought some cuttings from them and had no issues. They are quick on the delivery as well. I also recommend the bone sauce to put on the trunk of your trees to keep away deer, etc.

I ordered starter plants last year through Azure Standard. They were certified organic, very healthy plants.

I got some comfrey crowns from Strictly Medicinals and was very happy with what I received. I only needed 6, so the price was less of an issue. Note: true comfrey will propagate readily by seed. If you want one that will be easier to control, try the Bocking 14 version. The seeds are sterile, but you can still propagate it via root cuttings. Strictly Medicinal has 6 root cuttings for $24 (S&H $10.90), or 20 for $70 (S&H $15.90).
