Turning off the TV years ago was life changing. Growing more veggies this year is tiring, yet rewarding. We still need the farm stands, but I sleep really well at night!!

I was so happy to hear of this group. We just love you and Wanda. My Sweetheart and I live in WV and I have learned a lot from y’all, we have a (heated) greenhouse and I’m hoping to grow through the winter this year. The constant rain really did a number on my garden so hopefully the greenhouse will make up for it. We only have 1/3 acre but make the most of it. Here is a picture from a few winters back. God bless your words and your works.

    Sincerely

    Marilyn

Like a lot of you on here, I have been following Deep South Homestead for a long time. I never commented though. I have 3 greenhouses currently and I grow using Aquaponics, Hydroponics, and organically in raised beds. For the first time this year I have raised butternut and kabocha winter squash. The vines took over my third greenhouse. I will raise them outside from now on. The vines are at least 40 feet long, as they have entirely crossed a 30-foot greenhouse, come out the other side and are climbing a chicken wire fence. I really enjoy your spiritual insight and I agree this is a spiritual battle. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge! I look forward to learning more from you and others on this site.

I turned off the TV in 1980. Have done lots of things instead since then, but this year I grew some Danny Corn… and of course, some tomatoes 🙂

I’m not a big TV fan either, although I think I replaced it with the computer. LOL

We tuned off the tv and this happened! We built two cinder block raised beds 4’x20′, moved all my large tub containers. Next came the 10’x28′ hoop house. Then came a 20’x22′ covered chicken pen for 3 hens and a cantankerous ol’ Rhode Island Red rooster named Henry. My husband got Chicken Math flu and bought 41 baby chicks. Now they need a pen to grows some before they go to the big pen. So bought a chicken pen which needed assembly. Now the Rhode Island Reds need their own pen because they cannot get along with other breeds, so this weekend we created a third pen for them. We are kinda tired for this average age of 70 year old couple. May want to sit on the porch a while, but we may get another cutting of hay and, and, and it never stops. Love our way of life. My hubby did all of this by himself.I supervised.

Your husband sounds like mine: can’t hardly sit still, loves to work, he will be 70 next month.

Hello, Vickie. My husband will be 72 this year. We worked everyday of this extremely hot summer. The only time he really sits still is on the back porch drinking tea, telling me he is going to have to slow down one of these days.

Nice to meet you Debra! Sounds like your husband needs to drink more tea so he can rest! Love your photos, y’all built an amazing space! We thought when we retired, or in my case semi-retired, that we would have lots of time to sit around on the porch! But with the garden, the orchard, my pollinator gardens, honey bees, installing solar panels, moving my mom to a house on our property to care for her and planning on putting in a high tunnel this fall, it keeps us busy! But so much better life than the 9 to 5, traffic, rat-race we were living before!

Lol, he probably does need to drink more tea. Retirement is so much better than working a job. We also built chicken pens and a hen house. I want to name my buildings, no time to sit down and paint. The humidity is so bad right now. He actually came inside three times today to cool off. Stopped work early today. It was 6:30. This winter he will prowl the house like a caged tiger!
