    Hurricane Preparedness

What is the first things you do when you know for sure a major storm is coming your way?

If you already have your supplies ready, then you check every detail. See if something is low, like gas or chain saw oil and needed food stuff or meds. Restock any items that are low. Do all this a few days before the storm hits. Don’t wait until the day before. You will be competing with all the ones who wait. Be prepared for any of LIFE’s storms.

I have a Facebook page called “ preparing for emergency situations in Gilchrist County Florida.” Although it is designed for my county, an emergency is an emergency and hurricanes fit that bill. I have lived in Florida all my life and have been through more hurricanes than I care to count. Everything is important in being prepared but I think having a safe place to be, clean water and a few weeks supply of meds (if you take meds) is at the top. Then food, including food for your animals. This is the first year we will have freeze dried foods in Mylar or glass jars. I think this will be important to having ready cooked food and just adding water.

Hello, I also live in Florida, Central the Ocala Palms area. However, looking to move. Every time I watch the different channels and see everyone at the farm and raising their own food, I start looking for another place to move to. 🙏

Ive had a farm for 35 years about 30 minutes from Ocala. Go permaculture. It changed our food production to an abundance. I am not familiar with Ocala palms. I hope your outside the city limits.

Hi there! I am outside the city limits, but not good enough. Do you know about any properties for sale in your area? How wonderful to have had a farm for 35 years! We had a farm for 15 years but had to sell everything we owned due to my husband’s health. But, so thankful that he’s find now and we’re ready to return to that farming lifestyle. Oh how I wish I still had that 10 acres…..but can’t look back only forward😉

I know a few mail ladies that do rural routes. Two are in Marion. One in interlachen. Do you want to stay in Marion? As a single mother of two I’ve farmed it by myself.here this year we think it will be mild, maybe we can do 4 vegetable gardens this year. You truly could grow and sustain yourself on less than 5 acres. Unless you want animals.

God bless you, that’s a lot of work by yourself. I really don’t care where we go, and Marion is fine, and my husband doesn’t care. He told me that wherever I think is the best location, he’s all for it. Well, having said that, I also want cheaper taxes. My taxes went from $1600, to $3100, and of course all the utilities really took a hike up, and our HOA went up twice in one year….that didn’t make me happy. But, more than all that, you can’t live the life that we want here. I want to raise my own food….veggies, fruits. chickens, etc. I also do a lot of food prep, and travel to Plant City to buy bulk for canning….but I would rather raise my own, because I don’t know what they really put on this stuff. I ask questions, but always feel that they tell me what I want to hear….you know what I mean. ☹

Im a workaholic. So it’s fun. All Marion taxes went up. They had to publish a notice that the papers were just forecast not the actual bill. A lot of people called in and complained, pushed back. So we will see when the actual tax comes out. So mine went up enormously. That might help you in your decision making. There is going to be a small window of time, from when real estate tanks and your cash is still good. Because of all the elite that live in Marion county it has attracted big buyers. Mostly for larger tracts. I will keep an eye open. There are a few places around that owe a lot in mtg money, some are second country homes. I will keep in touch.

One more thing….do you sell any of your produce? If so, we would love to buy from you😉

I am a workaholic as well, I am always working on a project, and like to sit back and see the fruits of my labor. Thank you for all the good information. Yes, please let me know if you hear anything. I’m going to list my home FSBO and fully furnished and turnkey. I believe that makes my home more marketable to out of State folks and also folks that are just looking for an investment rental, because upon closing, if they wanted to rent it out on day one they would be able. I’ve done this before and I actually had a price war going on, so even though this is a different real estate market, I’m praying this will also be the case this time as well. Of course there will be capital gains taxes to pay….and even though I don’t want to give the gov’t money…..just because, I will gladly do what it takes to get out of this community….lol. Question; what do you think will happen outside of that window? I had to stop listening to a couple of Youtube channels, because it was just do depressing. One guy spoke about people will be extinct on this earth by 2030. Well, I started thinking about all the dollars they make by having visitors to their site because of all the ads, and then drew the parallel of mainstream media and their sensationalism and of course getting rich because of commercials. along with the statement”…if it bleeds, it reads” mentality. So, keeping a reality check on it all. I do know and believe that we are going to have very tough times to go through, and without a doubt, hence the reason for becoming self sustaining, and being around like-minded folks that support one another.

Hello, also in Ocala area in north Citrus county near the Withlacoochee.

I agree with the permaculture angle for long term food security, I also have added annual plants for short term solutions.

Best wishes on your journey out of the city,

    I have basic supplies prepared.

    Check on animals, clean yard (shorter the grass—easier cleanup), secure objects, refill any prescriptions if needed, clean out drainage pipes, cook, of course, charge all electronics, wash all clothes, clean house, fill bath tubs, clean out fridge/freezer (only necessities) , pack extra clothes place in vehicle, fill all vehicles and tractors with fuel, bring saw, hammer, nails inside;

    check on family members—make plan.

Stay tuned to local and New Orleans weather stations. Apps on phone.

Continue to pray for protection of our coast.

Betsy, Camille, Katrina tested— to name a few.

One thing I do is borrow soil from my raised beds and fill sandbags to keep flood water out of my house and garage.

A chainsaw or 2 is an absolute must. Have a fuel powered one. With Ida it took a good 3 weeks to clear our way into a family member’s neighborhood. The town of Hammond was so devastated that all the public assistance ppl were overwhelmed with restoration efforts.

I like to fill plastic bottles with water and freeze them because the frozen bottles of water will help to keep the fridge cold if the electricity goes down. Also, after the storm, the bottles of water can be used to flush toilets, and by warming them in the sun, you can bath with them…been there, done that..lol
