Best places to get Herbalist training?
Posted by Ken.l.wells on August 23, 2022 at 6:39 pmI’m interested in learning more about home healing with herbs/natural sources. Does Cindi Quay or someone she knows offer courses on herbalism?

MemberAugust 24, 2022 at 1:03 pmWe use our plants on the farm for healing. On our online store, we sell some of the herbs you will see. We somewhat keep it vague intentionally, but the herbs are there, with some descriptions for use that the wise person will research further. We have things for diabetes, inflammation, pain, hormones, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, and so much more. I think you will like it. Not to mention Moringa which is a super food. These are plants, so you skip the risk of seeds that may not take.
Remember to use that 10% discount code: FREESTEADERSBETA
I guess it will be good for just a few more days now.

That is wonderful. We grow some of our own for healing, yet having alternate resources are very beneficial. Thank you for sharing.

Good morning. I was introduced to Dr. Patrick Jones by Carolyn and Josh Thomas on their Homesteading family YouTube channel. Dr. Jones, and his family have an herbalist school, store, and YouTube channel. I have learned so much super valuable information from his youtube channel. I have also purchased their grounded herbs, simply amazing!

My first book that I started with was written by Matthew Wood. It is available on Amazon and it is called “The Book of Herbal Wisdom”
It is an amazing book and I still refer to it after years of study in herbalism and homeopathy.
If you are a Christian you may have to look past his ignorance about “magic” vs Gods gifts to us but it is a VERY helpful and inexpensive book(I have many of his books)
Doc Jones (homegrown herbalist) and is amazing too… I would like to ultimately take his courses… especially for the community support in these hard to figure times we are in

Here’s a pretty good book.
-
Thanks! I’ll look for a copy. I’d still like a mentor/instructor to communicate with. There’s no substitute for an experienced person.
-
I’ve been studying herbs for quite a few years, prior to when I was finally diagnosed with Chronic Persistent Lyme disease. Then I dug deep into them, working towards healing/improving my symptoms and for current ailments for myself, husband and other family members. I was just telling my husband, as I pick a few new ones each year, that one is always learning.

I bought the book by Nicole Apelian, Ph.D The Lost Book Of Herbal Remedies and it’s amazing.
-
I’ve heard of that book but haven’t yet acquired. She is an excellent source.
-
I have this book as well. It is an excellent source. So much information.
-
We love her book! I planted herbs & foraged seeds & “weeds” to dehydrate and/or make tinctures with this year. In 5b our season outside is winding down but I’m over wintering some plants from the garden, planting in the house, & planning next years garden (& expansion of a medicinal garden).
-
I’ve been making plant medicines for 40 years ad I was very pleased with that book. I was surprised it was as good as it is but it’s very easy to understand and very specific and a good place from which to do more research about each plant. And most are very commonly found in the US.

I have found a great resource to be, “Southwest school of botanical medicine” Michael Moore started it, and since his passing his wife is continuing.
-
Try Cindi @cindissacredgarden. She is very knowledgeable and can help you find what you may be looking for. Books, teachers, and her products are great.

I am a Master Herbalist. I was trained by Rosemary Gladstar years ago, and also got additional training through a company that I used to sell for. I grow and make all kinds of medicinal herbal products, and have been studying for more than 33 years. I am thinking about teaching classes, maybe on YouTube???? But I am willing to answer questions if I can. I wrote a book a few years back called Christian Metaphysics that has many of my favorite recipes in it. You can get the ebook version super cheap on Amazon, or from Balboa Press. (The paperback or hardcover copies are more). I promised my girlfriends that I would videotape the next time I make my All Purpose Boo Boo Salve, so that I don’t die without teaching them how to make it. (Have been making it since we had little babies for diaper rash, and now we are all Grandmas!)
-
I plan to learn more about herbs and how to use them. Today I purchased comfrey, mountain mint and golden rod from a neighbor. I have a few other things growing as well, but plan to start researching uses of herbs that I can grow at home.
-
And also know the herbs you don’t have to plant but just grow anyway! In the pacific north west about 30% of my medicine is from the trees ;). got to love the weeds
-
-
Would love to hear some of the common aliment recipes that you could teach

II have been collecting weed seeds. There was a big vacant lot next to my apt. complex. There are lots of weeds there. I want to save seeds. I ordered the once lost book but I cannot tell if what I hazve is for sure. Would you be azble to identify these weeds if I take pictures? Is there somewhere I can send the pictures. Many are going to seed. I DON’T want to eat the wrong thing. I could pay you a little for your time. Thank you! With fertilizer being in short supply and not being like Danny without any Pharma, my pee is worthless. Weeds can grow in the poorest soil with little to no water. And they have great nutritional value. I think I may have LAMB’S quarter, milk those, and a couple others I have no clue what they are. I am in Northern Utah. I know I have dandelions, wild lettuce, Purslane and others I cannot think of right now. Thank you so much!
-
There is an app you can get called Plant Net. All you have to do is take a picture of the plant and it will try and match it.
-
Be careful with plant ID apps. A friend of mine recently used one to identify things on her property and told me she had tons of stinging nettle and when I saw the picture of it, it turned out to be ragweed. LOL

Healing Herbs Natural Living has classes. (YT)
Honeystead Apothecary (YT)
How in depth do you want to go? Around the home or into the community. Amy Fewell has a YT channel and recommends some books. I’ve bought/read most of them and they are very informative.
Maybe we could have an herbal forum for discussion?

I am currently taking an online class through the Homestead Academy called Homegrown Herbalist School of Botanical Medicine that is taught by Dr. Patrick Jones. The text book that he uses is The Herbal Medicine Makers Handbook by James Green- which Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast also recommends. So far it has been excellent and I am really learning a lot of useful information that I can use for my family and the animals on our farm. He is a practicing veterinarian, a Clinical Herbalist, and a traditional naturopath. I highly recommend this program!
-
I agree! I am devouring YouTube videos (which are free) by Dr. Patrick Jones and can’t wait to join the online classes! I am chomping at the bit! Highly recommend.
-
I have been studying herbs and homeopathy for over 15 years.
Look into dr Patrick Jones at home grown herbalist.
Maybe I will see you in class
-
ok, I’m always up for learning, and the more and more interaction I have with our “healthcare system” (and I’m a non-practicing RN, former EMT, BS in Psych…) the less I want to interact for anything other than like broken bones and such. So.. I signed up for the course.
-
-
I totally agree with you on Doc Jones “The homegrown herbalist”. I love his experience and his humorous personality. Very easy to learn from. I don’t have the income to take his course yet, but soaking up every bit of his “free” YT info.

A couple of Good weeds that you can get out of your yard are dandelion & plantain, lambs quarters, purslane…. There are really so many it can get overwhelming. I’m focusing my study on the wilds that can be foraged in my area. But I must confess, I really love all the foods (Herbs) that are our medicine.
-
I had to intentionally add purslane and lambs quarter…. haven’t found any plantain to add yet. One of these days!!!
-
-
I agree. It seems as though new medicine is popping up every year. So I do a search then further research. God tends to put in front of us what our bodies need.

New member from the Wild Atlantic Way, in the North West coast of Ireland. Thank you for the journey that lead me here. I found each of your channels individually and it is great that you are all working together. I found this video interesting, informative, supportive and I felt encouraged with the work I have done with my own herb garden. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqE3gvH1_e0&ab_channel=HomesteadingFamily

Carolyn and Josh with the Homesteading Family are great! They have highly informative information. They also do videos with Doc Jones from the Home Grown Herbalist which are worth watching.
-
-
You can look up Heidi Villegas. https://youtu.be/CRCSdJ6k-AI Here is a video of her talking about becoming an herbalist.
-
I have been a student of Heidi’s for the past year. She is wonderful.
-
-
It looks like there’s lots of good resources to look up. I’ll add a video series on Rumble by Judson Carroll on herbs.
-
Thank you for this one. He is great! I love that he’s on Rumble.

Hi Herbalist here, for about 15 years with clinical practice and long time wildcrafter and medicine maker. One of the best herbalists i know of and one of the better books is by Sam Coffman
He is a great teacher and has a lot of courses here: https://herbalmedics.academy/about-us/faculty/
A lot of the books around are usually regurgitated information, you have to look quite hard to get books that are written by people with actual hands on knowledge. Taking a look at the American herbalist Guilds website is a good place to start. At some point you have to understand the principles behind herbal medicine, not just the this plant is good for this thing, and a great teacher for that is Mathew wood who has written some great books. Good luck!
