I’m still good. But, I’m also in the throngs of menopause. I’m lovin it!! LOL This comes from someone who use to LOATH winter!! LOL I don’t see us turning on the heat yet. The next three days are lows of freezing or below. Tonight 31, Tuesday night 28 and Wednesday night at 31 again. Maybe by Wednesday I’ll be cold enough to turn on the heat. It was so hard to pull up all those tomatoes and peppers today. They had sprung back to life after no heat and a couple of rain showers. I got two big stainless steel bowls full of tomatoes and peppers. All the tomatoes have to ripen in the house. I have NO IDEA where I’m going to put them all.

It’s crazy how many women are doing this alone. I love the hubby too. But, he doesn’t help with gardening…except he digs holes for me on occasion if I need it. That’s about it. He’s the same way with “preparing”…leaves it all to me. I feel ya. Just keep on keepin on. I tell myself…God is watching!

I live on an acre and a quarter. I grow A LOT. I’m lucky the majority of the property is in the sun. (Well, this summer that was a curse, LOL) I started growing a lot in the ground in 2020 when the co boo flu hit. I’m so glad. I also grow in greenstalks, pots, buckets, raised beds, etc. You can grow a LOT on this small space. Right now, I’m in transition from summer to fall/winter in zone 7b. Still growing are Okra, Sweet Potatoes, Yellow Potatoes, Tomatoes, Peppers, tons of herbs, blueberries, figs, apples, pears, onions…. I have grown much more and still looking for spaces. I don’t have much help though. My husband could care less and mainly leaves it up to me. So, it’s hard. There are so many other things I grow but, I’m just not growing right now.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t feed yourself on an acre. You can! Now, I may one day have to skip the meat. But, I’m okay with that. Will I miss it…YES! No room for animals. I don’t have to have chickens because so many around me do. I either buy eggs from my “chicken lady” or we trade stuff (produce I grow that she doesn’t) instead of me paying her. She also gives me free duck eggs cause no one wants them. Sad! Good for me though. I also buy some meat at a local farm near me. The other I usually get at the Meat Market in a town close by.

All I can say is GROW GROW GROW. Gardening is a never ending lesson. I started in 2012 and I still feel like I am in first grade as far as gardening school. There’s always a new pest, a new disease, CRITTER ISSUES and wild bizarre weather!! This year to get my corn…I had 10 rows of 10. I got almost ALL of it and had some to share because of cayenne pepper!! HA I literally sprinkled cayenne on every corn silk I could reach and the leaves surrounding it. IT WORKED!!! They still got plenty but, I got most of it. This was after two years of them getting it ALL!! By they, I mean deer and raccoon!

Here’s something else I want to remind people of. Just because some of the new people in your area are from blue states….they may be good people. They are conservative and trying to escape the blue. My best connection I ever made out here, that seems to know EVERYONE I don’t, is a transplant from the suburbs of Chicago. I’m in Tipton County Tennessee. Lots of folks are finding there way out here. Not all are bringing their politics with them. Although, some are, unfortunately. Be nice to people. You never know.

Best advice….SAVE YOUR OWN SEEDS!! If you don’t …learn HOW. Great book to get is Seed To Seed by Suzanne Ashworth. Also, learn to graft and propagate fruit trees and cuttings.

Small spaces are great. We are 55 and 62. It’s hard but, can be done. At our age and with only me doing it…there is no way I need more ground to grow on. You don’t need acres upon acres to feed yourself. I don’t care what anyone says.

October 14, 2022 at 8:12 pm in reply to: Berkey Water Filter System !

I started using Zero Water filters about 4 years ago. I still have two Berkey’s with filters put away. I replaced them with the Zero Filters. I LOVE them. According to some tests Mike Adams (Health Ranger) did in his lab…Zero water filters even get roundup out of your water. That was it for me. Plus, when I would test the water with a TDS meter, Berkey was like 20 something. So, I will keep my Berkeys for SHTF water situation. But, the final filter will always be with the Zero filter. I have enough filters put back for 3 years.

I also didn’t like the fact that my Berkey filters started stopping up only after a week of use. They say you can clean them…peel them…I had heard and tried everything. For the cost of a set of 2 plain black filters without the white flouride filters that don’t last long at all….I can buy a years worth of zero filters and they actually WORK. Like I said, I’ll keep my Berkey’s for emergencies. They will not be my last filter though. Zero will. Because I want ZERO particles of anything in my water.

It was the heat and drought, I think. I’m in SW TN, also. Most of mine looked like that in July. The ones that are coming now don’t look like that anymore. I’m glad I didn’t pull them ALL up. They look to be coming back to life. But, today, tomorrow and the next are going to be extremely hot again. So, we’ll see. Also, my tomatoes in pots did absolutely horrible this year. The ones all in the ground did much better but still not great because of the weather in July. I watered the ones in pots sometimes twice a day. The soil was still very dry. Crazy!

Their stream is really bad tonight. I will just watch the reply later. It was buffering so bad. They were all blurry too.

You might look up BA on Step One Survival on youtube. He’s done a LOT on reloading. He is in NE Tenn. I think he has a live tonight around 7 or 7:30. He’s a disabled vet and his wife is an ER nurse. They are a funny couple. I usually try and watch the first part of their live right before Deep South. After Deep South I go watch the rest on the replay. I bet if you check his channel he has a playlist on reloading.

Having said all that, I sure hope you were talking about Ammo. LOL

Agreed! Sometimes a quick video about planting, harvesting, a new bed, a new project helps to light a fire under me. If I watch anything about what’s going on in the world…I get analysis paralysis. I ask myself…why did I watch that??? Being outside in the sunshine with my hands in dirt or prunning something…the world just melts away.

I know they are good for you. I just can’t do it. LOL They stink and are gross. That’s my opinion though. Now, I’m sure my opinion would change if I was starving. They use to be 89 cents a can here. Now they are around $1.50.

Now why did somebody have to go mention my SECRET!?!? LOL I have a big stash of sardines. I put one in each tomato hole with other “secret ingredients”. They are also something I use once in awhile to give our pup a treat. He LOVES them. I add them sometimes to his food. He also drinks the water in the can. NASTY!! Sardines are very hard to find right now. And they have definitely gone UP!
