I have not done this. I’m jealous! This is a goal of mine. I would make sure the basic needs are there first (water, shelter, heat, food).

I always had problems starting broccoli or just about any brassica. They always went leggy, thinned out on the stem and just died. I finally figured out it wasn’t so much the lighting as it was too warm in my house. Last year, I started them in a cool room and Perfecto! This year I’m trying them in the high tunnel, in fact I just planted them today. I’m in zone 5 so are you sure zone 7 isn’t too warm?

Lol I love it. My son (2) just watched and put the feathers in the bucket (I compost it for nitrogen) and he gave a few chicken feet to the dogs. My daughter (3) grabs the chicken and brings it over to me and she’ll help pluck feathers.

I’ve mentioned to our local library about starting a seed catalog a few months ago. They have an old card catalog too. I even said I’d volunteer to set it up. Unfortunately, I have not heard back from them yet.

I love this idea too! I’m always one for getting kids involved!

So you move them to this every day then back in at night?

😂 must be a wifey thing because I do that sometimes. I feel like like it’s the pressure of the world so I want to be as sustainable as possible so I just say I’ll figure it out later

It’s actually cheaper to do the colony but it is a lot more work. I labor of love. They were upgraded last year from a 10 x 10 to 10 x 13. I only keep breeders over winter. The meat is worth it because I’ll sell, use it for myself, and supplement my LGD and pet dog with it. I do all the butchering myself so I pay no one. I want to use the manure for the garden but am nervous about grazon. Not sure where to find unsprayed hay but it’s on my list.

I tried the tractor too but even though I had wire down they would still try to dig at times and my husband got mad (all the homesteading falls on me – he doesn’t want much to do with any of it). I considered trying to do this for grow outs only but this year, that water completely damaged our backyard (everywhere else is woods).

I have this one too and I like it!

I got it almost a week after I received my chicks and I was told all states are behaving differently so unless you’re in Maine, you may get nothing or maybe something similar to what I got.

I’m not freaking out because I think I have sick chicks or going to get germs from my chickens…I am on freesteading.com 🤣 I’m just upset my state is making a big deal of it and possibly scaring others – especially first timers. I’m trying to encourage sufficiency. I am also pissed they are making hatchery’s buy additional licenses just because they happen to fall in the area. This is nonsense and only going to raise cost for other people and discourage buisness.

Yes that one. Sorry left out Ranger.
