Here are two books I have found useful this year. Gary Pilarchik also has a great website and helpful YouTube channel – The Rusted Garden.

I’m relatively new to gardening and am learning as I go.

I continually remind myself that I can’t learn without first failing.

    Hi & welcome!

Living in WNC for approx 8 years now, I’ve noticed that many large land sales are done privately using personal referrals and connections through community, neighbors and church. Many families live adjacent to each other and buy up land around them for future generations.

My best suggestion is to find the area you want to buy in and move there. Buy a “steppingstone property”, get to know your neighbors and join a church.

Be prepared for opportunities to present themselves and be ready to jump when the right one comes along.

Best of luck and thank you for your service.

I vote to leave it be for now. I like seeing new ppl who join and ppl whom I don’t yet follow.

It would be great if notifications could be changed so that I don’t get those for everything regardless of my setting to only see replies to my posts.

Thanks for all the work you do to keep this site great!

I too have dense hard clay and am working in remediating a patch of trees, vines, scrub brush, etc. What I did with half so far was to clear and chip most of the trees then spread the wood chips out, then my lawn guy brought his leaves from all of his fall jobs and dumped then spread them over the whole area. I now have an area 2-4 feet deep of organic material.

This should break down in a few years. In the meantime, I’m pulling up vines and weeds as they poke through (if I don’t want them) and am “hole planting” things like berries. Next year I may move to big/easy things like squash, etc.

In other areas, I’m running my chickens through, tossing in organics for them to break down, then seeding with a mix of clover, grass and some grains.

All I do know is that uncovered clay will bake into terracotta in the sun so keep it covered with anything you can.

Mostly though, For now, I’m building boxes, buying planting mix by the yard and planting in those.

    I’m learning as I go.

    Good luck.

I would first, see if this is possibly a “brain freeze” issue or truly a struggle with retention.

Comprehension and retention are formed by motivation and necessity. Can he read, comprehend and retain things he is motivated by? (eg video games, personal books, card games/rules/narrative, etc) If so, the issue may be a motivation and/or practical necessity issue.

Try a reward system. This can teach a separation of a reward from an activity. Comes in handy later in life (eg paycheck).

It is critical to first see if this is a brain freeze issue. If it is, stress management and accommodations should be made along with practice outside of the classroom and at home.

Lastly, this could also just be a pure avoidance behavior. This can be addressed by requiring a satisfactory outcome and assistance with walking through something he doesn’t like.

I guess what I’m saying is, knowing the reason for the difficulty is necessary in order to resolve the issue.

What a great idea! I’d like to see something maybe like a “Fiber Forum”. All things fiber related – sewing, fabric, crochet, knitting, quilting, raw wool working, weaving, rug making, embroidery, etc.

What a beautiful toothache plant. Mine are still pretty small but have some flowers.

Try eating a leaf from the. Coolest feeling. If you’re brave, pop in a flower bud. I was spitting for several minutes but the tingling is very cool and my mouth felt amazing afterwards.

I’m going to try to make a mouthwash from it.

I too have trouble with notifications. I think I have hundreds mostly spam that I can’t delete all in one go. I also have notifications mostly turned off and receive more daily that I should not be getting.

I am reluctant to attempt interacting as I can’t sift through the many useless notifications to find ones I actually want.

Any help from anyone would be appreciated.

This is a beautiful thing. I just happen to get recommended a DTG video on this VERY topic the day I asked this question. I watched the whole thing and your explanation is awesome! Thank you. I have a new fire pit (bowl) and now I need to get my hands on a barrel.

Funny, I think this process accidentally happened with a compost barrel that I purchased last year and have been tossing chicken poop and weeds into for a year. It has a hose on the bottom and I opened it up once, and only once. The smell made me gag hard.

I plan to have the Vicks ready for when I open it up to see what I can use in the garden or move to an open compost pile to calm down. I’m afraid for my neighbors when that day comes.

    Thanks again and happy growing:)
