Biochar is basically a cleansing agent like activated charcoal, has a high carbon content that helps add compost to the soil, it holds moisture an releases it like a sponge, and is generally a good additive to a soil mix.

Nature does it best and when forest fires blaze thru, what is left is biochar and ashes. It’s the way our mother nature cleans and renews.

The best thing to do to prevent powdery mildew in the 1st place by watering in the morning and not the evening. Keeping the leaves of the plant dry. Of course, that doesn’t always work. I’ve used Neem oil as a preventative and that works OK.

I think the proper mixture of baking soda and water in a squirt bottle should adjust the leaf PH enough to make the mold at least stop. Might wanna youtubes it since I’m not 100% sure on this one.

I got a mutant Chinese mustard green that made banana leaves.

I feed all my plants with Perma-Gard fossil shell flour (Diatomaceous Earth) and black molasses.

1st year and no problems yet.

OK EVERYONE, I’m going to permanently fix your blossom end rot.

The supplements I use are black strap molasses and Perma-Gard fossil shell flour (diatomaceous earth)…

NOOOO! DE is not just for bugs, don’t tell me that for the 100th time. lolol

DE is a diatom that is really good at fine water filtration, that is why it is used in swimming pool filter systems. 1 of the main reasons pools are sparkling clean is from DE.

I use a fist size volume of each ingredient and disperse it into a 5 gallon jug of water. I have experimented and have yet to have seen symptoms of over feeding. Tomatoes love it when they are fruiting. As soon as the yellow flowers form start adding the DE molasses combo to the soil and water it in.

THE KEY IS TO CONSTANTLY AGITATE THE WATER AS YOU WATER THE PLANTS, OTHERWISE THE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH WILL FORM A LAYER AT THE TOP OF THE SOIL THAT WILL SLOW WATER FLOW IN THE DIRT. YOU WANT THE DE TO REACH THE ROOTS.

That being said, my mater plants will stick out 2 ft sideways while holding fruits and hold their own weight. Once the fruits swell with water the branches will fall to the ground but the branches don’t break.

If you want a resilient plant structure and no blossom rot, take notice.

The ingredients are still cheap in bulk and go a long way for a homestead

All that, buying, harvesting, and trading seeds with local minded people.

I store as much as i think for 2 years because 1 of those 2 years could have bad weather or certain crops wont grow well. Most seeds will last more than 1 year if store properly. Diversify as much as possible.

I bought these tobacco seeds in 2014 and just found them. Heres the plants growing this year.

Miyashige Daikon is not spicy at all with a light radish flavor. These are examples of the leaves and carrot. The leaves are a little rough for me to eat raw but are good in soups. Cherished by the Asian community.

Winter crops are mostly leafy greens, I would suggest radishes. I grew Miyashige Daikon radishes thru the winter in 15 F and 6 inches of snow as the carrots grew ever so slowly. You can eat the greens also. They make huge white carrots.

I love how the origins of the Disney Cartoon “The Secret of NIMH” (National Institute for Mental Health) come from the mouse utopia experiments.

The DE does not like to stay mixed long so the application requires a quick mix and pour. Otherwise the DE will form a crust over the top of the soil and make it harder to accept water. So the key is to have good draining soil to accept the DE in the 1st place. Once you have it down you’ll love it.

I also use epsom salt to make the fruits turn red if the sun is not doing its job. It helps the maters swell with water and turn color.

Make a fist..That much of DE, same fist size volume for molasses in a 5 gallon bucket. So 2 fists total….lolol Should look similar to chocolate milk when its mixed properly. DE likes to cake in water so stir the bottom of the bucket real good until you know its mixed well. Enjoy
