Anyone with experience doing sprouts/microgreens as a feed source for their rabbits? I know there are tons of videos about it and the process and concept are simple enough. My question I’m having a hard time finding a good answer to is HOW MUCH should I try to grow for a given amount of rabbits?

My first thought was to use 5 gallon buckets stacked to make a “sprout tower” but I only plan on having 3 rabbits (for now; would be breeding later in the year, hopefully 2 litters). So maybe doing that amount would be way too much? A 5 gallon bucket has quite a bit of base surface area. Of course I realize I will need to see how my buns respond, how well I can keep a microgreen cycle going, etc., and make adjustments, but if anyone has a general baseline advice for me as a starting point, I would really appreciate it!

<div>A long delayed update to my own thread but while I’m thinking about it, here are some pictures of what I ended up making. I started these in November. I built these mostly out of on-hand material so the only cost was some water sealer for the 2×4 and the hinges, and then the plumbing for the watering system, and the feeders. I know the all-metal welded wire cages have their advantages, but I opted for something that could stand alone under a tree yet, sturdy enough to withstand winds, but still mobile if really necessary. I didn’t want to build a (semi) permanent “rabbit barn” or large covering in my yard. I’m sure I will find some flaws with this design that I don’t like in the long run, but I think it should be enough to get me going, and at an affordable cost (under $200 total). Maybe if this is successful I can consider expanding and building more cages or runs for a larger population later.

Now I am just waiting on my feeders to come in and I plan to either pick up, or at least pick out, my starter TAMUK buns from a local breeder this coming weekend. They will be under 3 months old so it won’t be until later this year that I can start breeding. I’ll be building some nesting boxes out of wood I have on hand at that time.

<div>I have mentioned it before, but I think both modes should be available. I think it should be easy to view the whole main feed (to sort of “look at what’s goin’ on out there”) but also have the filter option to just keep your feed page to what you’re following/subscribed/etc. I really don’t see any downsides to doing this, since it sounds like the capability is already programmed.
    </div><div>

This way people who like seeing everything can see everything and people who want to see a more filtered list can see that, and either can switch whenever.

Restricting the main feed permanently to only things you follow sounds like it would make it pretty hard to find other stuff others are posting that you would never be able to even know to look for.

Sweet, looking forward to it. Maybe not the long drive there and back, but it’ll be worth it!

Just an update on this, I successfully assembled a 16″ PSA kit a couple weeks ago. That was fun, like putting a LEGO set together! The upper came pre-assembled so I was able to put the lower together with a minimal amount of tools and effort. Function checked it at the range and all went well. Pretty happy with it so far for the price; went together well and shot well (at least functionally).

Thanks, I’ll check that site out. I fed my picky cat kibble again this morning because he was ignoring the chicken, and he puked almost immediately. Going to try to start mixing them a bit to get him used to the smell as safe to eat. He’s also funny about wanting me to be in the room when he eats, sometimes.

I’m still amazed at the prices of these things, but some looking around last night at other brand names indicates these aren’t major outliers. Yes, you can get cheaper ones, but they look much thinner, have bad reviews, have different fits, won’t close up on the back (for when you don’t need to straddle something), and don’t have hoods. So while the sticker shock isn’t gone, maybe these aren’t such a bad deal, assuming the will last a while. You said you replaced one after about 10 years? That doesn’t sound too bad.

I’m a few inches taller than your daughter and a few pounds lighter. Maybe I should get something bigger than Small, then, if I were to get one from Outback 🤔

I got some dark chicken quarters today and cooked them to see if they will eat this. One of my cats is nearly an omnivore but the other is super picky (so I’m not sure how he’ll take to anything homemade). I’ve been cooking tonight just to run the numbers:

Purina cat food is $57 for 16 pound bag, so that puts it at $3.56/lb

I can get chicken quarters in 10lb bags at the grocery for $0.48/lb (raw).

1 lb of dark quarters is only about 6 oz of meat once cooked and de-boned.

That comes out to about $1.50/lb for the meat itself.

So there is your main protein already less than half the price, and that’s before adding back any crushed bone or other filler (like maybe some rice). And this leaves a lot of bones to make good broth.

Hm, thanks, I’ll keep something like this in mind if I decide to go for a two-piece setup 👍

I was looking at the sizing chart. I think the S would be a good fit on me. Honestly, the XS would probably fit me fine (shoulders/chest) but it’s a little short for me. I don’t need it touching the ground but XS would only hit around my knees. Then again, maybe it would be good to get the M so there’s room around the chest to toss it over layers in the winter?

Assuming the measurement is from the top of the collar, not from the shoulders. The sizing chart isn’t clear on what point the length measurement is made top-side.

I will probably be bringing homemade baked goods. Something that can easily survive the long drive and several days of no refrigeration.

Don’t forget to sprinkle a little garlic powder on that bread before you grill it 👌
