I always use a fishing line and sinker… You can here the static level of the water, when the sinker hits the water, Pull out and measure the length of the fishing line, Then allow it to go all the way to down to the pump. To get full depth you would need to pull the pump out which normally involves a machine to help do so if it is very deep.

My solution here in Florida is just leave them in the ground and don’t harvest them. They start making slips, then I bury the slips in place, so they can root. If you keep burying the vegetation the stronger the slips will be with roots.

For the bottom I like to use old logs decaying… and brush… Then Tons of leaves, then on top of that your chicken coop scratches…. IDon’t want to mix that with the top layer as wood that has not broken down will pull nitrogen from the soil and will be bad fro your plants but if you have a lot of chicken manure mixed in there will be no lack of nitrogen. But for bottom fill that would work, I just find that old logs use up the space fast and you end up with a hugleculture like permies use.

Safe way to get rid of mice and rats only kills mice and rats as they can’t expel gas.
I make a mixture of equal parts flour, sugar, and baking soda. Then add about ¼ part peanut butter (to attract the mice or rats), and just enough water to get the mixture to form into small marble sized balls.
I then distribute the balls around the areas where the mice are known to be, I have lost count of how many hundreds of dead mice I have found all around the yard.

I leave the potato and slip as is… I let a vine grow out from the potato, the bury the bottom of the vine. I allow this vine to root, then after it is rooted I break this slip + roots off from the main potato .
