I’ve just recently started to dive into this realm. My first ever full meal-in-jar was chili. I ran across an amazing sale on ground hamburger and learned some things – mainly that we don’t like ground beef cooked plain and canned. Then I tried taco seasoning for that next sale I found, and that was ok but limited my use. This last I cooked up with peppers, onions, and garlic and while I love it I made the mistake of using pint jars instead of quart. Heh. I’ve also made some chili verde with pork which had been a big winner. Now I have like 4 different meats in the freezer to thaw and can in different ways. The seal on my canner gave out so I had to freeze the meat while a replacement seal was located – now I have to try and remember what the plans were… heh

For me, the biggest thing is that I give myself permission to not get it all done. I get through as much as I can, but there are physical limitations I’ve learned are hard stops. Then of course there’s just plain not enough energy to do it all. So I don’t even try to, though I definitely prioritize the list. Top priority items get energy first, and move down the list. If I’m out of energy or my body tells me it’s had enough, I stop. I have this fun hanging “egg chair” under a massive jacaranda tree. I love to sit in that and swing around, surveying the yard/gardens and listening to birds etc. I also do a lot of reading or writing, which don’t require a lot of physical energy but I find that are restorative.

My husband is a very type A personality who constantly stresses himself out. It’s taken many years, but he’s starting to realize that nobody will die if he doesn’t make it through his task list every day. Some things just aren’t important enough to give up my energy to stressing about, and he’s finally not only beginning to understand that but is beginning to live it.

For me, another big part is trying to turn items into play. If I interact with items to be done as a form of play, I find I have a lot more energy to continue engaging. Playing includes experimentation, working with new varieties, etc. Because it’s play, if it doesn’t work out, oh well. I learned some new things.

That’s a great perspective. I only cook for 2, so this is perfect advise. Thank you!

That is what I was hoping for! Everyone has unique ways of doing things, so I figured if I asked for help maybe possibly someone else would be inspired too. 😊 I made an apple-lemon marmalade which I thought turned out pretty well – even though I read the directions wrong a killed the pectin so … more like a marmalade syrup? Heh. I also found a caramel apple jam recipe I’m sooooo going to make!! And I’ll try that apple core vinegar – I made a version of it last year and used it in my laundry. Hehe. Thank you for the ideas and Source recommendation.

Apple preserves. That phrase rings a bell, but I don’t remember having them personally. Another great idea! And I hadn’t thought of making pectin… My fruit press arrived a few days ago and I was wondering what to do with all the dejuiced bits (other than composting). Maybe making pectin will work? Thank you

Lots of great ideas! Those Brandie’s options sound delicious, and I might get my husband to voluntarily eat some applesauce. Hehe. I had to look up rumtopf and goodness that also sounded amazing. I’ll be sure to do that one next summer. Thank you!!

I’ve done a stewed apple so apple. I’d like to try a pie filling – my husband has a love/hate relationship with this one. He LOVES it but hates the resulting weight gain. Hehe.

The spice cake concept is really interesting. Thank you! I’ve also never made a fruit leather before either. 🤔

My freezer is packed to the gills, so I’m having to look at alternate ideas.
