I’ve learned that wind chill’s of -25° with 40mph winds will help identify where your drafts are at. I’ve also decided that radiant floor heating is starting to sound much better. Our outdoor wood furnace is good but 1) It’s outside. 2) It’s forced air so a power outage will require using a generator. 3) It’s outside. 4) When the wind chill is -25° the @#$* wood furnace is still outside!

We are lucky so far, no issues. However, I know if the electric goes down we are in trouble. I have a kerosene heater but nothing that will keep more than a room warm. The husband doesn’t take things as seriously as I do. We have a natural gas generator but he has never hooked it up and I don’t know how to use it. 🙁

Time to watch YouTube! Haha. I’d bet you can find some good videos about that generator.

LOL Yes! I will need to build upper body strength while I am at it.

We faired pretty good. I’ve been doing this a LONG time.
We have back up, of back up, heat and electric, in case we lose power. Besides, I’ve got 3 big dogs to keep me warm. They do a good job when Charles is gone. ;).

Weakness: Not having goggles to protect eyes from the cold freezing wind, when outside taking care of animals. We are from the South, not accustom to negative wind chill temperatures.
Strengths: Overkill on insulating exposed outside water faucets and pump houses. Buried water lines deeper than necessary.

Great points on both strengths ans weaknesses! Thanks for sharing.

I’ve learned that to get my husband to prepare enough wood for the wood stove he has to experience this type of cold. Weakness: by the time it gets this cold hes gonna regret not listening to me about getting it chopped early. Lol.
Strength: when it gets this cold he gets a bit more serious about finding and chopping wood.

That certainly would be a wake up call!

Lol it’s not really global warming, it’s history repeating itself. Ice age didn’t happen because of humans lol just my 2 cents. I live up north…layers are your best friend, 2-cover your face, and 3…if you have a wood stove it will make you warm 3 times-cutting it/chopping, hauling and then burning it. Propane is the best source however if it gets too cold even that doesn’t work (if a tank freezes it will turn back into a liquid).

Thankfully we have not lost power so far this winter, although many near us have had those issues. I recently came across this and think it’s a decent idea as a backup or secondary backup to a propane heater like a Mr. Buddy. Since it is safe indoors and also allows cooking, it’s dual purpose, and it has a built in fan to distribute the heat. Have any of you seen this or tried it out?

20 years off grid in Alaska has made Missouri cold 🥶 not so bad! We came here prepared. We live in a house built with MO oak, started in 1871. We have wood only heat, we can cook on it also(I did all this winter). Having running water is new for us, but my son is learning about frozen pipes. 🤦♀️🤷♀️.
Don’t wear cotton! My best advice!

2 times in my 35 years in North Dakota it has gotten so cold that our propane froze. Boiling water and pouring over the tank turns it back into gas. Just an FYI in the event anyone has a full propane tank.
