Permaculture zones

Yes, think in terms of nearest and furtherest. Home is zone 0; immediately around your home is zone 1 (where you go everyday) then further out is zone 2, maybe go there multiple times in the week, zone 3 maybe once a week, zone 4 not as frequently and zone 5 is the least attended area (and thus the wildest).

My non professional breakdown is basically this, zone 1 is where you spend most of your time and want things close to home, example.. Kitchen garden. The farther you move out is a basis of where you locate things.. Example livestock.

Check out these Pimps, they got a podcast too 😉Permaculture Pimpcast https://open.spotify.com/episode/4d4t6239QwFgeloiQU2Gf8Permaculture Pimpcast https://open.spotify.com/episode/4d4t6239QwFgeloiQU2Gf8

Wow! I don’t normally listen to podcasts. But 5 minutes into this Perma pastures podcast I had to pause it and grab my notebook and pencil! It was so helpful. I sketched out my property with what I have keeping in mind what I want for the future! I have only been on my property for just over a year and have zone 1-3 pretty much established. Looking at it on paper, the possibilities are endless. It really helped with focus and eliminating a little bit of overwhelm to write it down. Thanks again!

Good for you! I just paid a lot of money to learn pretty much the same information that Billy and his family are teaching for free. I couldn’t fully appreciate how vaulable the information they’re sharing was until I paid someone else to tell me the same thing.

Hi Wilber! Billy has a couple of books that he recommends. You can search his YT channel for the video. The one I purchased was Gaia’s Garden. It has been amazingly helpful. The other one is by a Japanese guy – can’t recall his name at the moment. Remain blessed, 🙏🏼

The Japanese guy was Masanobu Fukuoka, and the book that Billy recommended (and so do I if that matters) was “The One-Straw Revolution.”

I will definitely search those books out! Thank you!

Funny, I just ordered One Straw Revolution on eBay this morning. As for Gaia’s Garden, I had to read it 3 times before it started to make sense to me. Now every time I open it I get some form of inspiration.

If anyone is interested that book is on my Amazon wish list and I won’t get mad if someone buys it for me lol

Seriously though in one of Billy’s YouTube episodes he talks about the books he highly recommends. I believe it’s a group of 10 or 11, I can’t remember offhand. I did however immediately hunt them down and add them to various “wish” lists I have online. As I set aside a little $ at a time I’ll eventually have them all in my collection. Knowledge is a special and powerful thing. One of the many reasons I love the PPF family is their willingness to share knowledge.

I ordered Gaia’s Garden last night. I listened to a couple of Spirkos youtubes today. I want to work out a way to transform my flowerbeds into mini gardens that don’t look like gardens. It probably should be easy, but my brain boggles when I try to think of companion plants that can go from spring to autumn, if not winter. I am in Zone 6b for plants. Most of my property would be zone 1 for permaculture. LOL I love the idea of a fruit bush hedge, like blueberry, but I have zero luck with them. I have some gooseberry slips I’m trying to keep alive, but failing at.

Good for you! They put out a lot of excellent information. I didn’t fully appreciate how vaulable the information they’re sharing was until I paid someone else to tell me the same thing. Now I’m taking a permaculture design certificate course and refering back to Perma Pastures Farm videos on YT when I want to see a concept or technique applied to a real situation.

“Zones represent patterns of activity and are not limited by available space.” It does have to do with layout although it’s not necessarily dependant on proximity, but on how frequently you visit and how much maintenance the area requires. I think Billy has mentioned in a few videos that the wooded area directly behind their house could be a zone 5 since it’s not easily accessible, unlike their driveway where they have their orchard. It’s further from their house, but easily accessible by vehicle making it zone 2 or 3. Definitely check out that zoning PIMPcast episode someone else posted for a better explanation 😄
