Comfrey salve on injured goose??

When putting up my geese tonight, I noticed that my female seems to be bleeding on her back. Before I grab her up and stress her out by investigating, I wondered if the Homestead Hunny’s comfrey salve might be good to use?

Or should I use an antibiotic ointment?

You should never use comfrey on an open wound, it will heal/close the wound too fast, not letting it heal from the inside out. Allowing the possibility of infection to set in. You can smear some comfrey around the edges to help with soreness, better to use Blue Kote from TSC to help dry and heal the wound.

Amendment: Not necessarily Blue Kote, but a spray-on something of that nature, it’s less stressful and easier for the animals.

Hi, you can also use silver to help with wounds. Just recently we had a poor duckling that got away from her mama and the chicks pecked her head. We put silver on it and it healed up in a couple of days. Rain Country sells a device that helps you make your own silver gel or spray. Good luck!

Great suggestion! I already have some silver spray I use for sore throats. You know, when you walk outside and see an injury, all routine solutions evaporate. I’m thankful for a community that can give these suggestions!

Not sure about comfrey, but I have had much success with raw unfiltered honey on small wounds with my pets . Also have known people with disabilities use it for decubiti (bed/pressure sores). Was surprised to hear a veterinarian actually suggest it to a friend who came for some honey for a rescued cat that had open wounds around its ears.

I’ve read in many books and articles about the natives using honey for wounds. I know pure honey doesn’t spoil. It will crystallize but that’s about as close as it’ll get to going bad. Even that can be remedied with a little heat and moisture. One article I read on native remedies talked about using a stick to collect spider webs. You then coat the webbing in honey and use the combination over the wound as a bandage. Never tried to unwind spider webs myself though. With my luck I’d accidentally collect some angry spiders lol.

Thank you MaryT! I did not find an actual wound (thankfully), but as a precaution, I did spray her pink tinged feathers with diluted chlorhexadine (sp?) solution. Figured that would take care of possible infection. Will check her again in the morning for injury – the whole flock was trying to help me tonight. So glad I found this forum to ask such questions.

I love comfrey, tried growing it in pots without success. So I make my oil from purchased dried herb and EVOO. It gets used quite often. Comfrey heals small cuts and abrasions quickly. Also very good on cold sores.

In my opinion, comfrey is the most valuable plant on the homestead!
