TX heat requires a heat-tolerant breed like the Brahma’s or a mix of two. Dairy cattle don’t produce as much milk if raised in hot climates.

Fertile African cattle breeds (especially Mashona cattle) are heat tolerant and parasite-resistant due to their slick hides and their meat quality is generally superior to Brahman cattle. Senepol cattle are also popular in warmer climates and some ranchers are starting to raise Senepol-Akaushi cross cattle that are heat tolerant for the production of high quality beef.

Our Angus and Charolais do just fine. Also, we have tons of jersey and Holstein dairies around us. Probably shouldn’t tell them that their milk is subpar.

I didn’t say “subpar”. I’m talking about VOLUME of milk compared to cows up north (Wisc).

Meat cows are what I’m looking for. Heffers right now. But if I can get a bull calf from different stock that would be good. I’m in south western North Carolina.

American Aberdeen aka “Lowline” cattle are easy to handle, produce high quality beef, tolerate temperature extremes well, finish well on grass, and have a lower impact on the ground than larger breeds of cattle.
