Thank you! Return on investment is where my mind is at! I want the biggest bang for the buck with the most utility. π

I have 11 hens that are laying now. They have their laying crumble, grits and oyster shell available at all times. But, the ladies eat what I eat! And, they eat any garden leaf cuttings or grass that I throw in their coop. I use wild bird seed for scratch. I found it to be a lot cheaper. They, and my dog have a hybrid diet of kibble/crumble and my (healthy) table scraps – mostly veggies and meat. I try to keep a substantial garden of kale and mixed greens for the ladies as well!

I had a horrible grasshopper problem this year. My figs were spared but, all my broadleaf plants were nearly decimated! The best solution I found was regular flour sprinkled over the leaves and plants every couple of days. Occasionally I would alternate or include diatomaceous earth. It seemed to kill them off rather quickly. However, it’s something you have to stay on top of throughout the growing season. If anyone else has any other solutions I would sure like to hear about them!

If you had your choice of only one, pigs or goats, which one would you start out with?

Thank you for the vote of confidence!

I have been hearing that goats can be quite The escape artists!

It’s comforting to know there’s someone else in the same position! Please feel free to join in and ask your questions too! I’m not even sure what questions I should be asking yet!!!!

Well…. When I initially started thinking about pigs, I was thinking about meat for myself and possibly selling piglets. This would help sustain myself as I’m trying to get as further away from the grid as I can. My one concern with pigs is that I am a single grandma (mid-50s) and I am wondering if I could physically handle pigs. With goats, not knowing much about them yet, I was thinking they might be physically easier for me to handle. Profit would be less, I think, from whatever I could produce from the goats. So much to think about! Thank you so much for all of the information you shared.

AFTER I posted this, I dug a little deeper! I don’t know why I thought there might be something special about fish water, but….. Kind of embarrassing! What I have been doing, before realizing it was called fish emulsion, was using sardines. I stockpile cases of sardines and prior to planting I mush them all up and spread them in the rows or the holes! I think I was on the right track and didn’t even realize it! Thank you so much for your response!

I look forward to the updates on your pigs and fruit Forest! I have planted five fruit trees and several berry bushes so far. I ordered a lot of comfrey from Perma pasture farms and can’t wait for it to get here! I have a flock of 12 hens… Seven of them are now laying and I am on egg watch this week for the remainder of the ladies. I am beginning research now on how to raise pigs for meat. I am also on a few acres. Please keep us updated!
