Have you tried spraying with fish emulsion to see if they need nitrogen?

Other lessons we learned in Africa 10ish years ago… be content and make do with what you have, but when you find something useful that is available buy it now bc you don’t know when or if you’ll see it again! And we ate very basic meals for the most part that I cooked on a little gas stove in an outdoor kitchen. We washed clothes by hand… when I started prepping I thought back to what the basics were that we needed all the time in those situations.
I didn’t move beyond those habits until we moved back to my family farm in 2020.

We’re processing our last pig, running 2 sets of meat chickens, getting our first cows (next week), building a cow shelter, expanding our 7000sf garden space to make room for corn and Southern peas, adding a dozen more fruit trees, selling plant starts, and whatever urgent needs come up. ๐

I’m in North Texas, and I am preparing the beds for English peas, and I might pick up more onions to add to the ones I planted in November. Potatoes will go in in February here, but I did plant some in the fall under deep mulch as an experiment.
This weekend I am beginning my seed starts indoors. I want to start more radishes, turnips, beets, etc outside, but I’m waiting to see what the weather is going to do thus next week first.

MemberJanuary 6, 2023 at 4:04 am in reply to: How much time do you spend in the kitchen?I would say at minimum I spend 2-3 hours a day in the kitchen and that is not counting canning, baking, processing meat, or dealing with garden harvest… if my kids are helping I am in there much longer… plus clean up time adds more than that. I cook just about everything from scratch… we have 5 kids, and sometimes it feels like I live in the kitchen!

It got pretty cold here in North Texas. The central heat died the first day the cold blew in (which apparently is going to cost $1100 to repair), and it got down to 40 degrees downstairs by the front door, but we kept it 50 degrees upstairs with space heaters. We kept the oven going in the kitchen through those cold days. There are 2 propane heaters downstairs that kept running. Our electric bill was running us about $35 a day keeping those space heaters going. I wish we had a fireplace or wood burning stove for back up here. There were 3 fireplaces in this house that were torn apart before my parents bought it 25 years ago.

I want to be in this conversation. We are finishing building our perimeter fence and then we get to begin shopping for our first milk cow. What are things I should look for in a first time milk cow?

Focusing on leaning towards the solutions God provides is so important or we can get swept away by fear. I know there are so many things we are not prepared for. But then I think on what people of faith have endured in the past. If I put ALL of my hope on what I can do, that can still be taken away from me. I want to be so intentional to cultivate a deeper faith in myself and help my children to watch for God’s provisions and leading as well. Stewarding their hearts is the most important job I have been given.

I’ve the chance to borrow a few of these from the library, and enjoyed the little I got to read before hubby snatched them. ๐
We would love to learn hide tanning and also more about foraging in the summer and fall! We have so much to learn!!!

It’s the link on their page I keep trying to use, but it only takes me to a back up food supply for MyPatriot Supply. I know last year it went to the AlexaPure, but I didn’t have the $200 then.

Our well water is really delicious and has great minerals to it, we’re just wanting to have one in case of contamination.

The snow and ice ended about 15-20 miles west of us. I think the river we are close to affects us getting snow as often. ๐
Thanks for the tips. We still usually have frosts until early April. Today I saw blooms on 2 trees. They aren’t very big yet. 3 years old and only 7-8 feet tall… it would probably take 2-3 large sheets to cover all but our small Anna apple tree.

Yes, I’m still trying to find solid advice on what plants to avoid and what to grow extra of for our cows. Locally everyone just buys commercial feed, and I would prefer to avoid that if possible! I just don’t know where to look.
