I go with lots of RV batteries. Then I can run more for longer. I have 4 solar panels charging 12 batteries now, and the panels keep up with the battery charging. Of course batteries can be expensive. I need to set aside a money saving jar just for replacing batteries over time! But so far, so good. I don’t know if I’m maxing out the charging capability of those panels yet. I don’t think so.

I would just air dry it. I don’t even use the dehydrator. But I’m in a (usually) dry climate, and things dry out well without getting moldy.

Network and computer technician, web developer, and before that a civil engineering/surveying designer specializing in grading and drainage. After that, I’m a jack of all trades and master of none, but I’ve done a lot of (successful) electrical, plumbing and house building and repair. have a lifetime of experience with dog raising and first aid. Also experience with goats, chickens and a little with horses. I do herbal home cures for humans and the dogs and goats. I work on my old trucks and cars, but you could probably find a lot better advice around than what I could offer for mechanics.

At first I decided it was too expensive and would look for something that was still effective, but maybe less expensive. However, I definitely haven’t ruled it out and will study it more. I do want it to last as long as I do!

  • Things have been developing fast in the US. Really, there’s nowhere to escape what’s coming in. I think we’re only managing to delay the trouble reaching us out here.

  • True! My sister-in-law married a man from Mexico, and they moved to Mexico about 4 years ago. Probably to his home area. They’re probably doing fine there, but she has a good “in” and can avoid some common ex-pat problems.

  • Good points to consider. Cross culture can be complicated, especially when the new place is very family or tribe oriented. You’re either born into it, or not. When push comes to shove, you get the shove, not a cousin! Even in the US you can run into that in a milder form. There are ex-pat communities in many places. But I imagine that if one person in the community makes a bad name the whole community will get to wear it.

I use herbs like mullein, lobelia and various others, and also eucalyptus oil, menthol and camphor in steam. That works better for me than a nebulizer when I have trouble breathing. I have and COPD and a weakness toward congestive heart failure, so that’s a pretty common problem. Tinctures and the breathing steam keep me going. Green tea helps a lot of people, too. I got a nebulizer and tried it for awhile, but it wasn’t as good and was more hassle.

I have blocked a couple of people on other sites because they posted ALOT and I wasn’t interested in their posts. No hard feelings, but I wanted to see some other things. Mostly I block on political sites if someone is gung ho for something I really hate. But just a regular number of posts and video links to things I’m not interested in, I don’t block for that. There are a couple of places where most of the feed is people with vlogs and podcasts. I don’t spend much time on those sites. But everyone is different, and some people like that.

Yes, agree. Some people make a lot of their income from selling things, and they might want a marketplace, which would be much more complicated. However, I’d be more interested in a Craigslist or classified sort of listing for things wanted, for sale, for trade or free. LIvestock included.

That seems reasonable to me. A separate section for buying, selling, trading and services. Then if you would be interested in buying or selling something you can go to the store, and if not the store doesn’t come to you in other forums.

What I’ve always heard is don’t wash the eggs at all. Maybe wipe off serious crud, but don’t rinse them and store them.

Water security is even more important than food security.

I’m not a great gardener, yet. That will improve with more practice, but meantime I’ll be eating squash, potatoes, onions and various herbs. My fruit trees also did OK in the past. So I would have to adapt my diet to what I can grow, and it would be kind of odd! But you do what you’ve got to do, and eat what you’ve got to eat. Another option is to make friends with your neighbors if you’re in the country. That’s how I get eggs, milk, chicken and goat meat until I’m set up enough to raise my own. It’s how I get water, and how I’ve gotten several other useful things. Of course if you make friends only for that, people will notice and start to avoid you. Friends take work and loyalty, but they are good for you, even if you’re not socially inclined.
