Great topic! Glad you brought it up. I did a couple few second videos on youtube a decade ago about a steam engine I built out of junk. It’s been eating at me ever since for not doing more. I’ve spent the last 45 of my 51 years learning how to do things and I really enjoy passing that knowledge along. There’s so much I can show people how to do. My biggest hang up is being on camera. I hate having my picture taken much less a video. I even setup another email and youtube account fairly recently and shot one or two videos of building a pond with a broken down 50+ year old Cat D4 that I bought cheap and got running. There’s been so much here over the last 15 years of homesteading and living off grid. But there comes the second hang up I love my anonymity.

Great thread!
I’ve raised two girls here by myself since 2011 and single parenting and homesteading is tough. Especially when the kids and their mom didn’t think they should have to help around the place. It turned out to be easier to just do everything I can by myself and let the rest slide. Yeah I know that’s not right but it is what it is. So here I sit on my off grid homestead on 36 acres with one daughter still at home for another year or so. I’ve only gone out once or rather with one person in all that time and that was many years ago. I’d love to find the right person or single parent to share this place with. I will NOT give anyone else a free ride though. Which is a large part of why I gave up on trying to date. I just keep on plugging along and one day I’ll get everything done or die trying.

Long as we breathe not much is truly impossible. Back in 05 the docs told me to make arrangements. I’m still here. Keep your chin up and keep plugging along.

Going to be tricky to atomize it in the correct dosage I would think. Those machines give a steady measured amount, not sure how you would go about that. Good job thinking outside the box though.
I am not saying your idea won’t work, just that some research is probably in order.

We are going to try one and see. The creek is small and only has 30-35 feet of fall in 1600 feet of length.

They are out there to be found but first you need to know what YOU want in the way of a good Machete. Thick blade, thin blade, stiff, flexible, long or short. I must have a half dozen but out of those I have two favorites. One cost like a buck at HF 20ish years ago it’s fairly light weight long and flexible and the other is actually a bush axe by name but in reality it’s a short stiff HEAVY machete and it was rather expensive IIRC

I went off grid back in 08 trying to get as self reliant as possible. It was funny earlier this year or late last year when my youngest daughter (17) found out other people lost power from storms and such, she had no idea. Our power has never been out since living here. Mostly because I tend to keep spare parts on hand and have spares for the spares.
Anyone who thinks living off grid is cheap is out of their mind. Granted there is no monthly bill but there are certainly costs involved. Plus labor

I just make sure the seeds are NOT coming from China. I usually try and buy from states that have a climate similar to ours here in southern Va But I have gotten good seeds from all over our country including Florida and Maine

I only use plastic to order online in person everything is cash & carry.

That 4 inch pipe is to hopefully pull some hydro power from one day. The idea is to one day be able to pump water up from the creek about 70 feet lower and a couple hundred feet linearly from the pond when the sun shines and let it out for power when it doesn’t. The pond is a rain catchment system only otherwise. The last measurements I took told me the pond is likely to end up around a half acre or possibly a little larger. It may end up nearly 20 feet deep if it ever fills all the way. Should make a pretty good battery one of these days. LMAO

AAfter I finally got the rest of the trench dug out and the pipe in. I haven’t gotten any new pics since but I’ve moved about a quarter of that hump to the dam which has raised it another foot or so. It’s raining again now so who knows when it will be finished. Plus I can only supply a few gallons of diesel a month toward this project. So far I’ve used about a hundred gallons doing this.

In the last post the first two pics were taken from the same spot facing different directions. Third pic shows where I was hand digging the rest of the pipe in. Fourth shows the D4 sitting on the hump I am removing to make the dam taller and the pond larger. Last pic was a shot of water draining for almost 4 weeks. I never did get the last few feet out.

Look at the bright side not everyone is drinking the cool-aid. I saw your post about being without a safe place. Might know someone who might be able to help.
