We have had excellent results with garlic salt. Garlic powder does not work. But something with garlic salt mixed in with a little molasses works WONDERFUL! However if these are dairy cattle your milk may have a different taste. You can get protein lick tubs with garlic salt. We get these for our beef and have had no issues with flies bothering them. Another thing we have done is to our manure piles is adding lime (barn lime) as it helps get rid of the maggots that hatch. Also, fly traps. We hang them around our perimeter of our yard. They stink but work awesome for catching flies…if you live where it’s warm year round Venus fly traps are something I would plant. Unfortunately we freeze for 6-8 months out of the year.

Lol it’s not really global warming, it’s history repeating itself. Ice age didn’t happen because of humans lol just my 2 cents. I live up north…layers are your best friend, 2-cover your face, and 3…if you have a wood stove it will make you warm 3 times-cutting it/chopping, hauling and then burning it. Propane is the best source however if it gets too cold even that doesn’t work (if a tank freezes it will turn back into a liquid).

Some things I have learned…look at their udder and teats. If you are planning to hand milk, you will want them long enough when you wrap your hand around the teat the bottom of the teat lines up with the bottom of your pinky (palm area). If you plan on machine milking that the back teats are spread out and not touching. Make sure the owners have tested them for brucellosis (if not bangs vaccinate), Johnes, and BDV. Also if they are currently being milked, they allow you to milk them. I ended up buying one (taking owners word) and she had a blind quarter plus had a history of mastitis.

2 times in my 35 years in North Dakota it has gotten so cold that our propane froze. Boiling water and pouring over the tank turns it back into gas. Just an FYI in the event anyone has a full propane tank.
