Does the group campsite have water available, either at the sites or somewhere nearby? I’ve got a lot to fit into a car for this, so wondering if I need to leave room to pack a water container. Are there firepits/grills/tables or anything like that or is it just plain bare campsites?

This site is primitive. No electricity or water. There is a bathroom and up the road a bit is a shower house.

Right on. Can we fill up water jugs at the bathroom or shower areas?

If you hold gallon jugs up I’d think so. Not sure how efficient larger contrainers would be.

        Jonathan,

You can drive up the road the paid campsite area. There is a potable water station there that you can use to fill up larger containers. We regularly use it to fill up 55 gal plastic barrels.

Thank you, sir. I will probably just be packing a couple 5gal jugs. Anything bigger would be hard to fit in the car!

I’m the “broadcast engineer” for a university and we have a football game that weekend. I’m pretty much tied up from Thursday to Saturday. No going make the SRF in Oct either, games every other weekend. But retirement is close.

Will you be posting an itinerary here (I would love to ignore Facebook if possible where I am a group member of the Preparedness Project)? I’m in the KC Metro Area with a toddler and a newborn, so would only be able to pop in for a few hours at most.

Absolutely yes! I am finalizing our headliner and will post a full schedule of events here and on the event on our page calendar.

I will do the same with sponsor information and prizes etc.

Awesome. If I’m able to swing it, expect me for the children’s activity so my 2.5yo can have a fun outing.

How did you get Riverside to donate? Three or four years ago when Yoda and I were organizing the then Campout, now Festival, with another couple we hit them up and they didn’t want anything to do with us. Spags, it must be your impish charm that won them over.

Sooo…..if you have never joined an event like this (we are new to the preparedness community). and haven’t camped out in a tent for years, um what should my husband I be prepared for.?.!. 😁. And possibly my 3 teenage sons.

First and foremost, be sure to bring a firm handshake and a willingness to meet new people. That is the key to getting the most out of the experience. The site is semi primitive. There is a vault toilet on site, and a shower house/restroom about 1/2 away. There is no water on site. As we told Johnathon, you can get water at the shower house or at the free potable water station down by the paid camping area; about a mile away. There is no power, so if you want to charge stuff bring a portable generator.

The site is well shaded; I would suggest bringing a pop up awning, though. You will see some 4 season tents. If the weather holds true to past years, though, a three season tent should be good. There’s been a couple of times we had to deal with frost, so be prepared, just in case; warm clothes, extra blankets, and maybe a buddy heater for the tent. You’ll be doing all your cooking on either your camp stove, or an open fire. You’ll see people cooking over the communal fire pit, their own camp fires, and propane camp stoves. We’ve even brought the sun oven out a time or two. When we all used to go spend the week out there, we used to pitch camp next to Tag and Bee. Yoda and Bee would set up a gourmet kitchen. The last year we camped they had a 3 burner stove, a two burner stove with an oven, prep tables, and a dish washing station. Tag, Snugs, Craig, 86, myself, and any other urchin that wandered near by were very well fed. Speaking of food, make sure you have something to secure it in, as the raccoons in the area are very brazen, and have a knack of getting in to what we thought were the most secure containers.

Be sure to bring camp chairs and such, as you’ll need them for the camp fire circle, classes and the pot luck. You can be as primitive, or as extravagant as you like. My first year I went alone and basically took whatever fit in my pack; plus a tote of food. I hammock camped for the weekend and cooked my meals over my fold up back pack stove. The last year we camped we basically loaded out like we were going to be living in the two room tent for three or four months. If it fit in the back of the pickup, it went with us. One year an attendee even brought a portable shower house, re-pleat with hot water shower, and a sink for hygiene.

That’s about it. You can get as elaborate, or as plain as you want. The key to getting the most is to be open, approachable and personable You will be surrounded by a bunch of alphas, male and female, and as long as you don’t prove to be crazy, an unbearable irritant, nobody will really care what you do.

      Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh, can’t believe I left out the pot-luck and Barter-town. On Sat night, bring your A game when it comes to cooking, because there is a pot luck. Fill some bellies full of delicious camp-fire food and you could become an instant legend. Disappoint and you could gain yourself a nickname of shame, like…”Jamie Olvier” (emotional damaaaage). Seriously, they do tend to put out a really good spread. After dinner, we set up Barter-town; no money involved, just trading and bartering. If you have items for trade; literally anything legal goes, bring them. We’ll horse trade and haggle for an hour or so, until it gets too dark, or the camp fire circle is about to start. You would be amazed at what you can walk away with. We’ve got a barter-town haul video on our YT channel, if you want to check it out.

The last thing, I promise, is to advise bringing wet weather gear, chances are if you are out there long enough, you will get rained on at some point. Ask some of the old timers at the Festival about the spring event we did at Pomme de Terre for same good story telling about being prepared for rain.

That sounds AWESOME!!! However, I don’t think we can get enough stuff in place for us to camp like that. I grew up camping so I have a good idea about all the scenarios you mentioned. I love using a hammock- that’s a great idea. I would need a camp stove to help keep my 3 alpha teenage sons (all 6’ – 6’5” tall)and my alpha husband fed. 😉

My family and I started with the whole homesteading thing (gardening, chickens, persevering, permaculture) before it was cool. But I guess we still are newbies with more to learn and more roughing it gear we need to obtain so we can come to events like this.

Thank you for your response back. It sounds like a great time with great people.

Debbi we would be happy to help you with what you need. You can barrow a camp stove or a solar oven if needed. There is also an open fire and a grill at the pavilion.

There is always a camp fire to cook over. If you do need an extra camp stove to feed that crew of yours, hit us up. I am sure one of us locals can hook you up with a loaner

We’ve all been there. Most of us have. And, most of us have several ways of cooking that we’d be glad to share.

Charles and I set up a big kitchen just for this reason. You’d be more than welcomed to use it. We also bought a huge coffee pot for this Campout. My 2 little ones ran constantly last spring, and we couldn’t keep up. Lol. This time we are prepared.

Just look for the Cargo Trailer with the 2 big, black, dogs. We’d be happy to help!

There isbspace for tents, campers, RV’s etc.

No one is expected to camp if they don’t want too. Come during the days, and head home to a comfy bed at night!

Hi all, I just joined this community and found out about this festival (thanks @Grumpy_G ), is this something where I can bring my family for just a day? My wife is into permaculture and prepping, just not big on camping (not yet anyway). This festival sounds great, but would it be weird if we only popped in for a day?

Of course it is. It is a very family friendly event. Lot’s of activities for the kids. Hot Sauce (aka Kristie)does a great job with the little ones. Admittedly, around the camp fire at night, the little ones should probably be sent bed before the talk turns to adult things. Looking forward to seeing your clan there..
