Public Commmunity
Group Description
Living frugal, natural, healthy, and as self sustainable as possible. Sharing what we do and what we have learned along the way plus healthy recipes, herbal remedies, gardening tips, wood working, auto repair, and much more. We are not fully off grid, but do as much as possible to live that way and we will be sharing these things as well (see our “Off Grid Living” playlist for that). Please note, I will also be sharing my faith and scripture along the way, as these are a big part of why I do what I do.

Excellent plan, I have old Braggs on the shelf before gates took it over, will use that up first. But making your own is even better.
-
I happened to make several quarts and a couple of half gallons of herbal vinegars last summer using the good Braggs ACV before the change. I did notice the weird color change in the Braggs a few months after I had done that when I passed it in the grocery store. So I’m good on vinegar for now. But I’ll make my own next summer.

I heard no idea Bragg’s was “compromised”. I’m so glad I read your comment!!

I didn’t know either but honestly I’m not surprised. Not at all. But this is why I love y’all. I learn so much this way. (Here as well as YT) We can’t spend all our time diving down rabbit holes to find all the info there is to find. What we do find in our time, we share. It’s a wonderful thing 🙂

I haven’t bought Bragg’s for years because it changed for the worse years ago. I buy this by the 5 gallon bucket instead. https://www.azurestandard.com/shop/product/food/condiments/vinegar/apple-cider/pure/vinegar-raw-apple-cider-organic/11564?package=CO128

Thank you for that info. I have switched much of my buying to azure standard.
-
You’re welcome. We get a lot of stuff from Azure. Their ACV is about the same price as making it yourself considering finding and using true organic apples and the time it takes to make.😊

I dug into this over the weekend and found an explanation that the color change was from a difference in variety of apples Bragg’s is using based on the season. This didn’t make very much sense to me considering apples have a season in general. Most varieties are both available and unavailable at the same time frames.
-
It’s not just the color, which makes no sense. I noticed about 3 years ago that there was very little mother in it which made me think they were diluting it. It’s gotten worse since the company was sold years ago. 🙁

Didn’t know Braggs had sold out. Guess I’ll be making my own from here on.

What kind of easily made vinegar would be best for canning or saurkraut type preserving? I have made beer, wine, mead for years. I definitely have cases of old wines I could use.
-
Keep in mind, with homemade vinegar, you will not know the acidity, so get some ph test strips to test your foods before canning. That’s the only truly safe way I know to can with homemade vinegar.
-
How did they do it before testing strips existed?
What if someday you can’t GET them? Then what?
-
First question, I don’t know.
Second question, then take your chances. But why take chances when safety supplies are available?
