I was gonna save this idea for when SHTF but if I don’t share now it won’t help as many people.

I know a bean company that sells beans that sprout and grow.

I tested a few types of beans and they all are good producers.

The company name is “Columbia Bean and Produce” out of Moses Lake, WA state.

WinCo foods carries this brand in their bulk food section. I know WinCo is in Texas and a few states in the Midwest. It might be close enough for the boys in the south to grab cheap bean seeds in bulk.
I recently bought Mung beans and sprouted them, I don’t know if they will produce fruit BUT….

You can eat fresh sprouts all winter, stir fry them in dishes also.

They are kind of expensive at 2$ / LB. I would say well worth the cost when you can store them for years and sprout fresh veggies during times when nothing grows.

Pics below are of the successful black beans, 2/3 of the row I planted got destroyed by a rogue chicken but I got a decent harvest from a few plants. I didn’t weed much either.

The other beans I know will produce are Mayo Coba, Navy, and Great Northern varieties.

I grew these also but with poor results because I never planted them into the ground.
They grew and fruited but were not happy about being root bound in pots.

If you store bulk beans to eat, you might as well make sure they grow too.

Imagine the amount of people that could be fed if everyone here hid 50 lbs bean seed for Farmer John.

That is great news! I will contact them to see if they have a catalogue.

Jean will e-mail you a monthly price list and the available beans in stock. They said minimum orders directly from them are 1000+ lbs. and you have to haul it yourself. Maybe ask the lady up front any details you need to know beyond what I told you here.

You can order 25 lb bags from WinCo in the bulk food section and they get it to the store near you, but they will mark up the cost roughly 50% from what you see on the monthly price sheet. All you have to do is call bulk foods and they’ll take the order, call you when its ready, and you pay when you pickup.

I tried to sprout garbanzo beans and they did not sprout so I can’t say for certain other beans will sprout. The ones I mentioned I know sprout for sure.

Also, their bulk bags of popcorn sprout and grow well.

Last time i checked they had no whole peas, I wanted a few bags for a potential cover crop.
