Living Off Grid While On Grid

My goal this year is to focus on really trying to be as close to off grid as I can while we are still, unfortunately, on grid. I have water that runs through my property which is why I’m driving myself crazy because it seems my #1 issue I have when the power goes out is water. More specifically potable water. I don’t have the budget at this time for a Berkeley. How is everyone filtering larger amounts of water? (I will have more questions but wanted to start here first). Thank you.

Maybe making you ow water filter is a idea? Some makes them from buckets or something and buy only the filters.

I am thinking about making a filter bed with plants from an ibc Tank or smaller, to put the rainwater true before the water filter inside.

Good you are thinking about off grid while being on grid, hopefully my husband is making something to on time. Good luck and others can answer your question better than I can.

That sounds wonderful! I need to harvest rainwater too but I want to use that for the gardens.

We made a charcoal, gravel, sand filter. And we have extra supplies put by in case we want to make more.

I store emergency non potable water in clean kitty litter tubs. Figure it will flush down what needs to be flushed. I can boil it or run it through my Berkey if I get desperate.

I use an in-line hose filter and a 12 volt water pump.

This is how we made our outdoor water filter. I will be making a charcoal/sand filter for it. This worked great, but I to clean the filters more often that I do w/our Berkey

You said you put rain collection water in there but would it be ok for river water? I have seen something like this before I like how you guys use bigger stock pots.

Oh my, absolutely!! I think it would be best!!

I hope to update my system this year, adding in a sand and charcoal filter for extra filtration.
