Winter Grazing Options

In NW La, not much hay available or at reasonable cost so I am going back to overseeding pasture with rye @ 1 acre Wintergrazing 70 rye per cow. I used Gulf rye before but this Wintergrazing 70 is suppose to be more cold tolerant which may give me more grazing days. Hope to only have to feed hay in Jan and Feb. I have a homesteading size herd: 5 cows (Angus crosses), 4 calves, a steer (to be processed this week), and a Black Angus bull.

The ranchers 250 miles south of me can buy the sugar cane because it is grown there. Too far for me to haul. I had friends in SE La find hay for me at $40/bale and I picked up enough to feed in Jan and Feb.
