Im excited to find this thread. Off grid is my goal. I gave off grid living a test run this June and lasted one week, I quickly realized I dont have enough alternatives in place yet to be off grid. The first two goals are getting solar and getting an alternative heat source. Ive been researching both but the more I research the more confused I get.

So Im starting small. I have a solar oven and a buddy heater, and ways to cook indoors without using electricity. I often do laundry by hand and hang it to dry. Basically if a storm knocked us out I would be ok. But I dont have power to run the refrigerator or freezer, or an alternative way to heat the house long term. We are currently on natural gas for heat.

Starting small is OK. It’s the starting that is critical. Plan ahead. Makes your systems flexible and expandable. That’s what we are doing. There are plenty of resources now in our freesteading community that can help you. Answers are only a question away.
