Cast Iron

Only my husband could manage to crack a cast iron pan! I’ve never even heard of this happening! Those things are supposed to last forever! Can anyone recommend a brand that is your favorite? I obviously have a pan now I have to replace.

Well in my world there are pros and cons to different brands. So with that said I’ll give you my opinion. If you’re looking for a frying pan I would see if I could find an old Griswold. I have a lot of Staub because I like the design and especially on the Dutch oven lids they have tits so the steam drips evenly across the pot. I would run far far away from any cast iron made in C! Those are my thoughts

Thank you, yes I’ll be paying more attention this time when I go to buy it so it’s made here in the USA!

My favorite is Griswold, then Wagner (I lived 3 blocks from the Wagner plant), then Lodge. Don’t buy something that is not marked. Although I have an unmarked one that has been in my family 57 years. My daddy got it in a barter deal 57 years ago.

To the OP if this is a pan you want to keep you can have it repaired. I’ve welded several myself using nickel wire. The worst I did was a century old bell with a thousand cracks, well maybe not a thousand but more than I wanted to count. It was someone’s family heirloom from the 1870’s. I did get it to ring again which was what they wanted. It took a LOT of work! By the time I got it done before grinding it looked like a busy city roadmap going most of the way around!

It was not passed down, it was newer. Probably why it broke 🫤 and I didn’t know when I got it, but I will be paying more attention now, it was made in (third letter of the alphabet)ina. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I only use Lodge. I have a few others I have picked up at yard sales that are older, but most that I use are newer and the Lodge brand. I only wish they were not so heavy.

I was looking into lodge. I think I’ll probably go with that.

I really like the brand. I’m sure there is another good brand, but with so many knock-offs it is really hard to know. Antique shops might have what you are looking for, but now-a-days you really need to be savvy in what you are purchasing. 🙂
