This is a really great idea, I would love to see more communities doing this at the park and local farmer’s markets. Awesome that you’re doing this!

What a great idea!! Our free libraries seem to work well in our community. Since it is at the part across the street from me, I often bring down our extra books when we are done with them. But not my gardening/homesteading/herbal study type books. Those I hoard and keep for resources.

😇 The word “hoard” has such an evil feeling to it, but I am not ashamed of keeping these helpful tools.

Well said. I think having resources like this is gonna be pivotal for the health of communities when SHTF. Being able to freely share and exchange information, and help each other get started with the basics, is gonna be crucial. There’s gonna come a time when being gifted a bell pepper and some oranges is going to be a lot more valuable than the latest iphone for Christmas, because it can be propagated and renewed for years. I’m also interested in getting reliable sturdy hardware that can be hooked up to a mesh network to talk with global independent journalists, homesteaders and preppers in the event that the internet (and possibly government run postal mail) gets so insanely censored as to be practically unusable, that a mesh network with nodes across a wider area becomes the only way to get in touch with people in written form. That and I suspect radio are going to be some of the only options one day. You hope not, but you never know, always good to be prepared.

In my area the Master Gardeners started seed banks in the old card catalog cases at local libraries. I have not stopped to see exactly how it works but picked up a flier last Saturday at a plant sale.

I’ve mentioned to our local library about starting a seed catalog a few months ago. They have an old card catalog too. I even said I’d volunteer to set it up. Unfortunately, I have not heard back from them yet.

I have left facebook, and I am on MeWe, I run a Christian farming group there. But there is also a seed trading group there ->

    Seed Traders.

    https://mewe.com/join/seedtraders

I take volunteer plants I have and then I visit friends in my area and I swap plants. I have been working hard on using my aquaponic system / grow towers to multiply plants so I have more to trade and swap with others. This barter system has worked great for me and them as they get plants they want, and I get barter items I want.

I had several extra seed trays I took over to a friend, and they told me they were just about to order seed trays, and the ones I brought were exactly what they needed. It does help to focus on plants that people want, and to encourage volunteers by spreading seed all over.

Building communities is the way to go. Most people do not want to garden, but that is fine I will trade food for tools, or $, or etc.

    Another great idea….

A local school teacher takes extra seed she has and creates origami seed packets. The entire class folds up the packages and they then hand these seeds out .

With a class of 30 children if they do 5 packs each = 150 packs. it is a win win win for all.
