A tomato! A tomato!

Oooh! I grew a real tomato! Without blossom end rot! And normal size! This is (most likely) a black plum, probably could have gone another day, but I brought it in, and gave it to hubby, who proclaimed it a little firm, but super yummy! YAY! I don’t eat raw tomatoes, so I’ll be depending on him for taste critique.

Awesome… ours started out with bloom rot. Took a bit to get it under control. We’d never had that problem before. Glad yours are growing well now.

Yeah I’m working on remediating right now. I didn’t label (oops) and it seems like some varieties are more susceptible than others. So it’s a patchwork of “is it or isn’t it”. It’s not like I have a handle on fixing it. lol

Me too! That’s pretty much all that’s out there. But there a couple of teeny blossom end rots going orangeish red, one that rotted on the ground (oh I was so mad, it was the first one that fruited), and now this! YAY! I’m all those “teeny greenies” lol get with the program!

I’ve heard that some crushed egg shells sprinkled around the base will help with end rot. It’s usually caused by a lack of calcium in the soil, or so I’ve heard. You can do a compost tea of banana peels, egg shells and coffee grounds, especially with acid loving tomatoes, blueberries and azaleas – they LOVE used coffee grounds. At the very least, make a banana peel tea and sprinkle the crushed eggshells around the roots. You can often get used coffee grounds from most coffee shops. I know a lot of the ones around here will actually package them up in 1 lb bags if they know they have gardeners around that will pick them up. It doesn’t hurt to ask around. I hope this helps.

I heard one lady today on a YouTube video say she pours milk around her tomatoes, cucumbers, and squashes/zucchinis.

Yep, sprinkled and watered in about 1/4 cup of dried milk per plant this week.

Egg shells are great, but they need to break down, so they are best to add at the start of the season, or even better, the fall before. I do add coffee grounds to my beds in general. I can get about 20-30 pounds at a time from the Starbucks in town. Sometimes someone beats me to them that day (and I don’t go to town often) but I think other’s use of it is slowing down, while I’m still over here amending my soil, trying to make it workable .

Thanks! I saved one today – though I picked and tossed a lot more with blossom end rot. It needs another day or two before hubby enjoys it, but I think it’s another black plum.

Aloha 🌋 O’ how blessed and wonderful. Can wait to hear more praise reports from ya. Continued success to ya. You know some may call it a waste but I get raw milk from a friends cow and water my tomato plants roots and soil with it for a couple weeks after their first blooms appear. The milks encourages strong plant growth

, and prevents blossom end rot, which is cause from calcium deficiency. Sharin’ God bless and keep ya

I added dry milk powder this weekend. Sadly I have no source of raw milk (oh man I miss it, soooo good). If I had a source again, I’d be all about making cheese and butter and cream for my coffee… then the rest could go in the garden.
