Harvesting sweet potatoes

We thought our sweet potatoes shouldn’t be harvested until about September 15 but I looked at one today and saw the new sprouts growing. If you hadn’t have made the video tell us to get them out before they sprout, we’d have lost them all. We live on 1/2 an acre so we grow ours in three totes from Walmart but I’m so pleased with our harvest this year. We live in East tenn just across the hill from Perma Passure Farm.

That’s so funny that you said that…I grow mine in grow bags and have been wondering if I should dig them up. They flowered at less than 100 days, and are starting to break the surface. Your harvest is wonderful–gives me hope I have several sitting in my bags!

I hope you get a great harvest. I’m so thankful we watched Danny’s video. Could you let us know many bags you used and about your harvest?

Very nice! I would have never dreamed they were grown in containers!

Last year my husband dug up the potatoes only to find they were hollow! Something ate the insides in every one! We were so disappointed as they were good sized. I am hoping he gets them out of the ground before this happens again this year.

Hubby has dug up all the white potatoes and some of the varieties did very well this year. We do have odd ruts in our potatoes for the second year in a row now, not sure what is causing It, this is the second year we have seen that and he has been growing potatoes for 52 years now.

Our garlic this year was small, but he thinks he shaded it by planting taller plants too close. It wasn’t a big onion croup this year but picking up some at the store to get a bunch dehydrated. We planted sweet potato squash this year for the first time and those babies are huge! Hoping to can some of our winter squash, we have butternut squash also.

We are in Ohio on 3/4 acre. I am using the electric/digital canners now to can small batches at a time. After 52 years of canning and at age 73, I am thrilled to have these some electric canners, so much easier!

The title of the video was Stubborn Cows, sweet potatoes and she shed if you have time to watch it.

yesterday i dug 1 plant to see how big they were getting. I originally planted about 50 slips on Memorial day weekend and was/am worried about vole damage due to the fact that voles ate 40% of my regular potato harvest a few months ago. i think i will wait to dig the rest up for a week or two. Any curing advice? We have a bit of a cool front this week and i’ve read to cure they need to be warm and humid for 7 to 10 days

From NC here and just started trying to grow sweet potatoes this summer. We got them in a little late but everything seems to be going well so far. We’re just now starting to see some blossoms. So excited to see what the harvest looks like! Can’t wait!

In the Berkshires, Massachusetts, I counted out on the calendar and our day is October 10. We started with nearly dead sweet potato slips from a reputable distributor. Begins with a G. Anyway, they are flourishing and in 30 gallon grow bags. How will I tell if they sprout early so I don’t lose my harvest? I guess I could dig into one of the bags and see what’s going on… Still a little early though, not sure. We had a solid potato harvest with the 20 gallon and 7 gallon grow bags too! Going to be canning them tomorrow. This is so fun! All new to me.

Pictures did not upload the first time, maybe there’s a delay. Newbie! Sorry. The potato harvest should be attached.
