Goldenrod

  • Posted by Observationist_Dave on October 6, 2022 at 12:01 am

We’ve been getting the remnants of Ian for 5 days now, but I am going to go out tomorrow when it is supposed to clear and pick some goldenrod which I have heard is good for tea.

Wondering what other uses that people have for this much maligned weed?

Following! I love goldenrod, but didn’t know you could make a tea out of it. We have some in our backyard. I’m keeping it around because it is a great pollinator attractor!

    I also make goldenrod tincture.

I will be picking goldenrod to make tincture for the first time. What alcohol do you use? Can you give some good advice on this?

Do you drink it and what proof range is it?

I dry my herbs before making tinctures, so I use 80 proof vodka.

I store my tinctures in dark glass jars, but put what I’m using into dropper bottles, so I’m taking it by the dropper full, about 3ml, or 2 – 4 droppers full. The dosage for tinctures is really pretty small, usually a teaspoon or less.

What do you treat with the tincture?

Pollinator love is the extent of my knowledge as well, but I have seen several things this year about tea. I’m going to pick and dry some because our chamomile is now exploding and the bees prefer it once it is fully in bloom. Plus if I picked all the goldenrod near me, I would have to build a tobacco shed to dry it!😂 There’s plenty to go around.

I would love to know how your tea turns out! Yes–the goldenrod is prolific around here as well! 😀

Between golden rod tea and cranberry I cleaned up a urinary tract infection. No antibiotics! Yes, I know when it’s an infection. I went from can’t see the bottom of the toilet cloudy to clear as crystal in one week. God gave us good medicine. We just have to find it and use it.

That is awesome! That is one of the reasons I am trying this. My elderly Mom struggles with UTI’s. How much did you use for the tea?

I blended the dry herb to get a good blend of leaf flower and stem then used a tablespoon per cup. Drank at least three a day to clear it. I suppose you could use 1 cup a day as preventative but I’m not using it until I have to. I also used cranberry.

I just harvested some Golden Rod as well. I have been watching The Honeystead channel for medicinal recipes. They said it is good for kidney and respiratory. I will be trying some tea this morning.

Everyone please verify that what you collect is in fact goldenrod. There is a lookalike, and if i remember correctly, the difference is the shape of the stem. If anyone has more info, please chime in!

There are several lookalikes, and some of them are toxic. Be sure to identify correctly!

Great info to be aware of. I had no idea, I thought it was just goldenrod. My bees swarm it when it flowers and the hives smell like an old gym bag for about a month. Weirdly the honey tastes fine though.

I thought so too. I knew Goldenrod was good but I didn’t know it was that good.

I used goldenrod when I had a hornet sting on my wrist and my entire arm swelled up and got red. I overdosed on raw garlic and had several cups of goldenrod leaf tea, but it looks like ppl use the flowers too? Hmmm.

I mowed down about 1/2 acre of Golden Rod and other weeds this afternoon and the dust and pollen as crazy high. My nose has not quite recovered yet.

Same, my bottom lip begins feeling fat like I’ve had novocaine for dental work and I get hives on my forearms and neck.

I still haven’t ever gotten poison ivy, so it’s weird how different plants interact with people.

Most people are allergic to rag weed, which usually grows near golden rod. Golden rod is good for allergies. I think that’s why God has it blooming at the same time.

The ragweed/goldenrod allergen and treatment near each other are like poison ivy and jewel weed. Jewel weed is known as nature’s hydrocortisone.
