Food for Thought — Limited Supplies
-
Our biggest concern is water. Three people within a 1/4 mile of us put in swimming pools this past summer, I think they did it as a water supply source. I haven’t seen any of them using their pools. We are in an older development where everyone has 3/4 acre to an acre+ but it is within duty limits and no chickens allowed. We are 73 and 77 years of age, and I could never talk my spousal unit into a pool. We do have 4-50 gallon drums filled up in the basement and I bought one of those plastic bathtub things to fill up that says it holds 100 gallons.
We try to go to Costco weekly and buy a rotisserie chicken or two and make bone broth with the carcass and can quarts of the broth and chicken. At least we will get some nutrients in the liquid we need daily, as well as the protein.
My spousal unit gardens, I can but he helps me sometimes in the winter as I continue to can beans. I cook rice and beans and dehydrate those. I cook pasta and dehydrate. In dehydrating it will take less water to make it edible. Eating in dry form is acceptable as long as you have plenty of water to follow it down with.
We have been buying excess, knowing our adult kids are not doing so, one doesn’t have much money even though he works a very tiring seasonal job, the other doesn’t want to “clutter” her place by buying a bunch of food! It’s very frustrating that she hasn’t gotten the fact of just how very bad this is going to get. There is so much more to prep for besides food and water……
So few people seem to be seeing the reality of what is coming! They have blinders on.

How mutch you need will depends on a lot of things that matters to you, you family and friends and community. What and how mutch do you cook and eat, figure that all out and make lists.
My husband likes German food, my taste is Arabic and Indonesian so I need a lot more herbs and spices. Also not forget for canned food, more sugar and salt than just for cooking or eating eggs.
I do not count for soldiers, so need less than the hard core preppers like bear. How mutch is enough, everything is better than nothing. Do what you can and will use because you like it, not just because others do.

There is a extreme shortage of Antibiotics ( Amoxicillin is one of them! ) , Diabetes Meds etc. Make sure you have a 3 month supply of your needed Medication!
-
Also, learn your herbs and make a good stash.
Homegrownherbalist is a great place to learn
On YouTube and his website!

No matter how well prepared we are, at some point everything will be in short supply, from your toothpaste to shoelaces. How long will each item you have stored up last? How long until your toothpaste runs out? How long until your baking soda to make toothpaste with runs out? How long will your kerosene last ? How much can you store up ? Many items have a natural expiration date . Will you be able to make your own candle after the store bought ones are burned up ? Food, yes, it’s one thing, but the rest ? As long as things are just in short supply, we may be okay, but when the supply chain breaks down because of other short supplies or they close the doors to the no vax pass holders, things can make a turn for the worst really quick.
-
No matter for how long it will last, we must prepare it is our duty. Every day is one day, a chance for our children the next generations. God will be everywhere, but we must do all possible and not be lazy just wait and see.
Lurn old ways off grid also forage and grow, work together and keep faith believe how ever you want to describe.
Just do not turn against each other, protect all children and stand united.

One of my Mothers meds has been on back order for 4 months. Finally it arrived and thankfully she received a 5 month supply. Not sure how to stockpile prescription meds when we are only allowed a few at a time.
-
I’ve spent the past two-plus years getting my mom off as many prescriptions as possible, and now that it’s down to the minimums, I’m searching for herbal and/or homeopathic alternatives to hopefully be able to help her be okay. Maybe there are alternatives to what your mom is taking? I hope so.
-
I am looking into the med I need to take with herbs as well. There is a book called Medical Herbalism by David Hoffman that I plan to look into.
-
-
I don’t have many meds but always tell my doctor to do a 90 day refill. With some I only take half of the prescription and substitute with alternative
-
Alternatives are what I’m searching for. Any sources/resources are appreciated.

What are her illnesses, worries? I do not have a doctoral degree but was a Nurse back in Germany and learned a lot from my grand parents and old-timers. Or a couple of Websites to get you started ?

I found that a pharmacy in a nearby town would fill 6 months or 12 months of prescription medications at a reduced cash price. (Be sure to get a quote and ask how the doctor has to word the prescription.) Their “Extended Day Cash Plan” provides many generic prescriptions for as low as $70 for a 12 month supply. Here is a sample of what is offered:
I am sorry I could not figure out how to include the image.
My mother’s insurance did not cover one of her medications. The pharmacy gave us a cash price. It was more than $70, but much less than having it filled monthly at Wal-Mart.
My brother has also had medications filled through a Canadian pharmacy at a reduced cost.
I hope this helps. I am grateful for this community.
May God richly bless and keep you.

I’ve inherited my mother’s intuition and “know how” to always have food stored, especially with the garden bounty. Food storage comes easy to me whereas others struggle. We always can/preserve/freeze more from the garden than we need for the winter just incase next year’s crop is a dud. We just keep things in rotation. Two yrs ago after the C nonsense started, I started doing a big pantry stock of the dry goods and other things we buy on a long-term food storage basis – a year’s worth on rotation of everything. Now, with food prices, we have increased that food storage to almost 2 yrs in most foods, especially all the dried goods we use and things like tuna, salmon, etc in cans. For back up, we have some bought canned goods of veggies and fruit. Even though we do our own canned/frozen, a back up is always needed. An investment we made the past 2 yrs in buying several freeze dried #10 cans of various protein, veg and fruit, eggs, milk, butter…for emergency use only and those are tucked away safely. I would LOVE to have a freeze dryer but it’s not feasible for me right now, maybe one day. Next year, my garden will be even bigger and Lord willing, I’m going to do ALL my tomato products (and rely on the store for none of it) with the exception of what I already have in storage as back up. Expanding my herb garden as well so I can dry almost all my own.

Im just putting stuff up but really don’t know quite how to figure how much it will last.

I have been at this so long that I sometimes forget those that are just starting out. When I started I noted daily for a week all things we eat and drink. It started with a total of 5 but now down to 2 of us. You have to note food, drinks, condiments and medicine. When you have an idea then it is time to work out the weekly list If you take an Advil daily, that is 365 pills. If you drink sweet tea daily, how many glasses, that will give you an idea of tea bags, sugar, water need,, same with coffee. How many meals weekly are meat based, how many are soups ect. Once you figure out the food then move on to medical, household, everyday items, sewing, shoes and clothing. Pen and paper are your best friend for a long time. We have animals so I have up what I hope is a year’s worth of things for them, and replace as soon as I open something. Water, water, water can never have too much. Seeds and all the things that go with that. If you are on a fixed income, start going to the food bank, it is a big help for those in need. I also do puzzel books, puzzels, reading books, and board games, for life could go back many decades in a blink of an eye. Take it slow, pick the area of need most and start there. If you have food stocked, check out the medical end, the household end or whatever comes up at the store. Remember, buckets to wash your clothes, clothesline to hang them and clothespins, it is the little things that many miss. I wish you well and if you need more in depth help, let me know.

We have enough food for a year plus I have raised beds in our garden and a small greenhouse I’m in zone 6B
-
We have a years worth and are somewhere in for a second year I need to inventory again I try to do it once a month but its been 2 months since I last did.
I have been testing the last few years what I can grow in the house and greenhouse through winter its not much because we dont have a heat source for the greenhouse it is a goal to work out over this winter. I can keep lettuce, spinach and carrots for sure until February and then it is too cold so I have to take a break for a month. We have seeds for several years plus this summer I started seed saving. We are extending our 35×45 garden this year. So it should be 45×45 now. Our fruit trees are still 1-3 years from providing fruit but we have them and are adding a few more.
We also have fertilizer as well as animal manure because we have rabbits and chickens.
Water is a main concern for us, we have a 10K gallon pool and a hot tub both we only use bleach as our chemicals. We have a rain barrel for the aninals and then a couple of barrels incase we need to collect rain. Also we have a couple of ways to filter water but as far as having a substantial amount of fresh drinking water stored up we do not.

We have 6 months of food, but water stores, are less right now. As we’ve been using a bit of our water stores on the new property.
After looking at my storage, I have more seeds than I could grow in a year. . Plenty of varieties to grow and 90% of them are heirlooms. I’ve been propogating grape and other plants to move to the new property.
We are good on soap (obviously 😅) and other hygiene products as well.
Our mane focus lately is
water
Replacement parts/tools
Livestock feed

Newer to prepping, but making progress. Just experienced no power 5 days do to grid being shot up. Living on new land since summer, all wooded originally. Three weeks ago processed 2 pigs with another family and processing a 100 chickens tomorrow. It’s going to be a long weekend. And next week we have two more pigs. It’s never too late to start, even there are those who say it is. Worse thing you can do is nothing.

I got serious about prepping many years ago, when an ice storm took out our power. And then I beefed up my pantry during Covid. We are now at the use-and-replace stage, with the old items being used first: Lunch today is chili from our stores. I usually just replace what we use the next time it goes on sale. We do not have to pay full price for most of our food any longer. And I am seriously enjoying the savings!

Hello Danny and Wanda this Terminator from my crooked Little Homestead from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 I’ve always put food away for a year at a time growing and raising food for me and my family has always been a normal way of life. I believe living off the land and living I call the old way of life is the most important when I started watch Deep South Homestead on you tube 2 years ago made me believe I was doing the right thing I’ve always believed that the way of the world was not always going to continue in the way it was with watching your porch time opened my eyes even more. I have learned to live without hydro and continue to do so. Since the lost of my house to a fire almost 4 years ago and loosing everything made me even stronger, this is my new way of life and I love it I know in my heart it’s the only way thank so much for your encouraging videos especially porch time take care stay safe and God bless

We live in apt, in AZ. Our main worry is water. In a second story apt water is heavy. We might have 6 weeks worth of drinking and a months worth filled up in containers for other things. We have a water filter system. We live in suburban area, edge of the city. We have maybe a years worth of food for 3 people. I do a small patio garden, will not sustain but it is nice to grow few things. We try and add to the pantry but prices are getting really ridiculous now. Well God Bless you both
