Official Introductions – Say Hello Here!

Hi,
I'm Mark,
Northeast Kansas (born and raised)
Holton

Blessed with land and water that is not owned by the Bank -- which affords me lots of free time that I wish more could experience. Always on the Farm and transitioning the land back to a natural, healthy, nutrient dense way of doing things via Living Soil research/development/application, without use of synthetic chemicals.

Interested in all of the things...and have plenty of thoughts and opinions about them all. Love to learn from others and share my own knowledge base.

Moved to TN from the Northeast in '21 and started a small homestead while also holding down a full-time job. Currently raising chickens, turkeys, and rabbits. Previously had ducks and bees too. Planning a retirement in next few years to devote more time at home doing the fun stuff.
Glad to meet you, Mike. I waited until I retired (at 70) to start looking for homestead land. Had six good years on a small farm in VA, mostly solo, but the old body started falling apart. Wish I'd started 30 years sooner. Now I'm starting a Permaculture community in TN with several younger people to share the load, so we can all progress faster. I won't be much help with the heavy lifting, but I can still drive a tractor, care for livestock, and putter in the garden, so I'm looking forward to getting 'er going and can turn the reins over the the youngsters when the time comes. Try to get the physical work done while you still can. That part gets harder as you get older, but the rest gets easier the longer you do it, and the real food, exercise, fresh air, the antics of your animals, and sound refreshing sleep will keep you healthy and happy.

Hello,
We’re Mike and Jenn.
We’re a happily retired couple embracing this next chapter with open arms and dirty hands. He’s a lifelong plumber who finally traded wrenches for fishing rods, weekend projects, and singing his heart out, while she’s a passionate gardener who finds joy in coaxing life from the soil and turning backyard harvests into meals.
Together, we’re on a simple but meaningful quest: clean food, freedom, and fun. We grow as much of our own food as possible (it’s limited right now), love exploring local farmers’ markets, and dream about more off-grid adventures—whether that’s Jeep trips into the backcountry, homesteading experiments, or just quiet evenings on the porch watching the garden thrive.
We believe in hard work, real conversations, good laughs, and living lighter on the land. Life’s too short for processed junk, unnecessary stress, or sitting still. We’re looking for connection with like-minded folks who value real freedom, fresh air, homegrown tomatoes, and making memories that don’t require a screen.
If you’re into gardening tips, DIY projects, campfire stories (and maybe a sing-along or two), or just savoring the simple pleasures of a good life well-lived, we’d love to connect.

Retired also. Hope to get to know you on this forum. I came late to homesteading in 2016, but having a ball learning all I can as fast as I can (not as fast as I used to, unfortunately) LOL. Spent six months working on a small homestead near Reno, NV, after retirement to see if that was really what I wanted to do in my golden years. It was and still is. Spent a couple years with friends in SE Texas but found the climate too hot and humid. Then six years on my own land in SW Virginia 2019-2025 (much better climate but my land was too steep), learning mostly by trial and error, YouTube, and picking my neighbors' brains. Returned to my home state of Maine (too darned cold and growing season too short) where I spent the winter rehabbing an antique house for the second time, and now looking forward to more adventures (and warmer climate) on a new TN homestead and permaculture community forming in July and beyond. We'll be starting from scratch there, but with a group of younger people, we should make rapid progress.

This forum is fairly new, but growing fast. I've already gotten some great ideas from the members here. I think you'll enjoy participating. Good luck with your tomatoes and fishing.

You are definitely my kind of people 💕

I’m “SilverLining” which is an attitude as much as a character trait. It was either that or “DAMMIT! I’m blessed.” Currently living in central Arkansas because who knows where tomorrow will take me.
I’m very recently retired from critical care nursing but have always been a caregiver and don’t see that changing. I love the world of herbalism both culinary and medicinal, making teas, salves, tinctures, body butters, etc with a focus of providing true healthcare without big Pharma because we all know they are not providing healthcare. I forage through properties looking for medicinals in “weeds”, trees and shrubs.
I’m a messy gardener with herbs, vegetables and fruit trees intertwined “boots required upon entry unless you prefer grounding” with a live or die approach. Preserving the fruits of my “um” labor through canning, fermentation, dehydration and again through apothecary practices has been a way of life for me. I wouldn’t say I’m fearless but the bees, mice, spiders and snakes or hard work don’t send me running.
I’m inspired by YOU!, those who have faced their challenges, get up everyday and continue the battle of living a little freer. You share your challenges, seek solutions and share with others so that someone else might find a better way of obtaining independence. That’s inspiring!!!! That’s growth!!!!!
I look forward to growing with you all and hope to see you soon.

Hello,
My name is Timm and live in south central Wisconsin - small city southeast of the people's republic of Madison. I got here via the link from the old version of this forum. I live in a smaller city on a 1/4 acre lot. We have a decent sized garden and down to 3 chickens. I do almost all of my own repairs of anything - from plumbing to carpentry (built a 4' by 8' chicken coop); all automobile repairs (changed an engine, a transmission, and even changed my own tires along with the normal oil changes, replaced brakes, replaced bearings, and replaced axiles); and some work on small engines. Also, I repair my own appliances, work on AV equipment and help people set up their computers. I do not do much with the electricity other than put in outlets and basic rough work - too afraid to touch the breaker box. Planning to retire in a few years and do more to build up a small city homestead and help my sons build their little homesteads.
