• Welcome to Freesteading! We've just rebuilt the site and it's only a few days old. Right now it's quiet, but it will grow quickly with your help! Please feel free to post new topics and reply to existing threads. Every post helps build momentum. Looking forward to seeing what you share!

Have you completed a PDC, and if so from whom and when?

First PDC - Oregon State Univ., can't remember the year off the top of my head.
Took Geoff Lawton's online one in 2024, but didn't finish the design project due to family obligations, about to restart the 2026 course in a week.

Also have done Dr Elaine Ingham's "Soil Food Web" fundimentals.
and several other courses from rainwater harvesting, "Water Stories", and others.

I haven't yet but I am starting to study about it now. I only have 1/3 acre to grow on so, space is limited. We are just starting the "planning process" of our food forrest. @HippocratesGarden I may need your help (and @TAG AND BEE and any other experts on Freesteading). We can grow all kinds of tress, fruits, plants here. I really need some help planning the food forrest out. We are in SE Asia.

For trees, we were planning on: Bananas, mangos, coconut, papaya (which is more like a big tree like plant), limes,

For plants: garlic, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, cucumber, basil, cilantro, dill, zucchini, asparagus, okra, chillis

For animals: We only plan to have chickens on this smaller piece of land (and maybe meat rabbits later on). We have a separate piece of land thats 2.5 acres. We would like to have 4-5 cows and also have 3 ponds that will have fish to eat.

Im sure theres more but thats what I can remember now.

Is there a online planning resource you would recommend?

There are many sources here in the USA but not sure on Asia. I will look.

I have not. I’ve been taking information I’ve learned from friends on YT (@TAG AND BEE) and at festivals and basically implementing FAFO (F Around with ideas and Figure Out if they work) options. I’m not exactly limited on space (I’m on 5ac) but I am very limited on income, so taking courses of any kind is limited. Free information from those with the knowledge and experience is still great information.

Got my PDC online in 2020 from Tom Kendall, a protégé of Geoff Lawton in Australia. I've also completed Geoff's Permaculture Masterclass on "Greening the Desert", thinking I'd do something in NV or NM. I used 10 acres of my 30-acre farm in SW Virginia as my design final project for my PDC, and accomplished most of the design over the next 5 years as time and funds were available. Cut a couple of long swales to stop erosion and channel rainwater where it could best be used, planted a food forest with a half-dozen varieties of fruit trees, dozens of berry bushes, grapes, hazelnuts, black cherries, etc. Planted lots of perennials as well as annual produce, raised pastured poultry and pigs. Composted everything. Built a few hügelkultur beds.
