Lorelee thank you very much for all your knowledge and being willing to share!
Two turtles! I had NO idea there were black Bresse! I have wanted to try them after Simeon from Swedish homestead talked so reverently about them, but I was told that white chickens attract aerial predators and black chickens look more like crows, so are more off-putting. Your post blew that theory out of the water for sure! I am so excited. Now I need to go look for some Bresse of some color that doesn’t attract hawks. Do they come in plaid? 🤣

I started a batch in late August/early Sept. Planned harvest Nov. 1&2. It’s only 15 birds, but these are CC, and my last batch, I had to cut the carcasses in half to fit in the shrink bags. It will rain tonight in Ohio, and it’s been so dry, I don’t think they’ve hardly seen any since I put them outside. Culture shock is about to happen. This batch has some very sweet curious birds. I am going to need something stronger than my usual tea on butcher day. I feel like a sociopath….or Kathy Bates in Misery. 😔

You have thought your space requirements out really well. If you are breeding NZ, you may need another baby cage if you have 2 litters near or at the same time. A breeder near me has litters of 11 pretty regularly. Her litters are always 8 or more. Your hutch cards and waste trays are so professional! Your buns may need a suit and tie at such a nice “office”.

When picking an epi pen up from the pharmacy, please check the expiration while you are at the pickup window. Sometimes epi pens will have expired before they are sold. It happens often enough to make mention.

That sounds like a bomb-diggity remedy!

Is boneset also called comfrey? Large pointed oval dark green leaf with stiff hairs and hollow but somewhat juicy stem?

Look into water glassing your abundance of eggs for later when they are less plentiful. It works quite well.

Just for clarity, a bare copper wire along the bottom strand of the fence, looping each t-post and joining with the main ground rod. Correct?

I am leading by example as well, for septic clean out, cistern clean out, new roof, new chimney liner , new gutters. All me. All cash. I am charging him rent, and he has a good job, and usually gets a check to me by the 15th ( my requested date).

I really feel for you Julie. He sounds like he was and is a real challenge. I came to this site looking for a tribe. I don’t make friends easily and have a busy job with lots of on-call. Still hoping for a mag in my area. Take good care of yourself.

I could do that and tell my 84 yr old one legged neighbor …really. I think i am headed to a lawyer this week to possibly begin dissolution proceedings. I am so torn.

When I bought this place, I was an ignorant. Suburbanite. I had no idea the hydrogen dioxide goldmine I fell into. Not nearly as elaborate as your house, but the basement ceiling is an imposing nest of copper pipes. There is a 15K gallon cistern of rain water off the roof on one end under the garage (,totally hidden) and a well at the other end of the house and a quarter acre pond behind that drains into a state scenic waterway a 15 min. walk from the back property line.

My fears are being a basically single steader, and getting myself out of a jam. If I fall or get hurt on the property and no one knows to look for me. I’d rather not be fitted for low jack. I almost put the very big ZT mower in the pond, and when I called the husband (on the other side of town with the keys to the 4×4 truck in the driveway with him). I said I needed HELP right now. He swore at me and hung up. So I blocked the mower’s tires with firewood and went to the hardware store and some compound ratchet straps, a cable with hooks on both ends, and two come alongs attached to some walnut trees later, and the mower came right up the hill and away from the pond. Booyah! Sisters are doin’ it for themselves. And when you are hateful to your mate, be ye male or female, you have to sleep sometime. Choose wisely.
