We live on 10 acres in northeast Kansas that was previously planted with blue stem and hayed for years. Our soil is black and rich 2-3ft down across the whole property and will grow just about anything we plant. We’ve always wanted a forest of our own so instead of buying one, we chose to plant it.  On our 10 acres we’ve put over 300 trees in the ground of all manner of native Kansas species, 2 plumb orchards, a variety of different fruit, hardwood and softwood trees.  We spend our time caring for the trees as they come up and our intention is to turn this land into a wildlife haven.  We never wanted to be farmers.  Instead our focus is on cultivating land in a more natural state so that the animals we want will come to us and so we can also reap the natural benefits of our landscape through strategic planting and land management.  We have a lot of chickens, 2 dogs and in the future might get into other animals but no plans for that right now.

We have some lofty goals in time like building a new barn to replace the 120 year old one that we lost and we use our social platforms to share our journey as well as share a day in the life vlogs.  We’re all about simplicity and it is the hardest thing to achieve but our belief is simplicity affords a more intentional existence and connection with the world around us.  Come along as we share our visions, goals and labors of love.  We won’t tell you what to do, but we will share what we do in the hopes that it’ll bless you as well.  That’s what Free Homesteading is all about for us.
