    A garden fork would work and last for years. You also might try a long handled cultivator to break it up. I use both of these tools often.

    @TCam Boiling water would kill any pathogens like bacteria and protists. But you’d probably still want to run the water through a filter for any chemicals that won’t boil out. For questionable pond water, I’d run it first through a tightly woven material like a tshirt to get the biggest particulates out, then boil, then run through a gravity filter.

    I have a ProOne and really like it. The company developer used to work at Berkey. ProOne filters remove some bacteria like E. coli and giardia. The filter lab reports are all published on their website.
