It actually is in our off grid location. We are there every weekend. We drive 3 hours there and back just to be without electricity and people. Lol. We love the quiet and the beautiful property we are so blessed to have. It was my great grandfathers place and we have been working so hard on improvements and additions to the property. Also we are in rain country to being in way way northern Cali😀 so I know how that is.

I grew up homesteading. I have had such a calling to get back to what makes me a whole person again. My husband is a city boy and never had animals so it has been a 35year struggle to get him on board. I have slowly gotten chickens and rabbits and quail for our small town back yard. He doesn’t care much for it but he knows it’ makes me happy. We finally purchased our 5th generation off grid family homestead last year and although we are only living in it on weekends for now until we get it updated and more manageable, I’m so happy and yearn to live there full time. We have our garden there and we are working so hard on clearing trees and brush and replacing roofing and adding on. It has become our haven. He loves it as much if not more than I. Being self reliant is the most rewarding and satisfying feeling. There’s nothing to compare. I feel we have prepared in perfect order so that if there were any disaster man made or otherwise we would be perfectly comfortable.

  • I was raised on a farm in the country. I was in 4-H and FFA and learned how to sew up flesh wounds, give shots and pull babies. I learned how to carry and shoot a gun, hunt and butcher. How to use every part of the animal possible. I have been working so hard to learn as much as I can as fast as I can. We built our own cabin 21 years ago. I learned plumbing, electric(rewiring old lamps and such) rough cabinetry, how to use power tools, how to build furniture and shelving. We drive 3 hours every weekend to work hard turning it into our homestead. We built a nice little garden area and have planted quite a variety of fruit and nut trees. My father is a logger and has taught us how to fall trees safely. At least as safely as possible. I have learned to forage, make tinctures and oils, extracts and liqueurs, teas and salves. How to make soap, deodorant, tooth powder, lotion, chapstick, and shampoo. I sew and make felted slippers and leather baby shoes. I clean, card, dye and spin wool and then knit and crochet socks, slippers, hats, scarves, hand bags and bibs. I water bath and pressure can all foods. I make dog food with the left over scraps and potatoes and carrots. I raise rabbits and quail and chickens because at this time we live in town and aren’t able to have a full farm like I’d like. I also have a great dehydrator and use it often for fruits and veggies and sometimes Jerky. I have recently learned to make bread and wish I hadn’t because I like it too much 🫤 I learned how to make yeast from a potato and from pineapple juice. I also learned a sourdough starter recipe. I think one of my favorite things I make is dandelion jelly. 🙌🏼🤤🤓 we have bad earthquakes here in cali and my old clock broke in a fall off of our mantle. I was told by a clock repairman that I could not do the repairs myself since replacing a broken spring is dangerous. Well, I did it anyway and I’m here to tell you it’s not. I’ve tried to always keep in mind that if someone else can do it so can I. Always believe in yourself. You can do it too. 😀 this year Id like to learn to relax. That is my goal 😂

I have had it for 21 years now. Got it from an old antique shop. Works so beautifully.

Haha me too. I have no place to put the foods I’m storing. I have filled half of our basement. I have some in my dining room that I am currently repackaging a couple of days a week. I also am dehydrating my own foods, canning every weekend and getting other things I think we may be needing for one reason or another. Those all have to be stored properly. We have begun transporting our foods to our weekend homestead. It is a 3 hour drive so it’s a lot to get done. We will be moving there in a few years if not sooner. So I am currently stuck in two locations trying to get everything done which there is never enough time in a day to get much of it done while working full time. My poor dining room somewhat resembles a war zone. Our house was hit hard by the earthquakes and we have a lot of construction going on also. My head is spinning but I’m really trying to be up on my game by stepping it up a few notches.

You forgot wood cook stove. It’s my ultimate favorite. I have no other oven. It works so beautifully

Same here although I craft with wool and do craft shows so technically I could sell.

  • Oh I sure could use your skill of calm! We have had hundreds of earthquakes here in northern (nearly Oregon) California since December 20tb. Most are between 2-4.5 but trust me when I say that it is just unnerving as hell. The 6.4 at 2:20 am took out our huge brick double stack chimney and fireplace and caused countless small damages to our home. Every cabinet was emptied of its entire contents and it looked like they each vomited shattered glass in every single room. So my nerves are toast. I’m so afraid a huge one is coming because we have never seen this much movement in the earth before. Can you share a little calmness with me? 😆

  • I’m so sorry. I will say a prayer for him and wish you the best. Please do not hesitate to ask for help when it is needed.

  • There is so much to learn out there. Please learn self defense. I neglected to add that in. It’s super important!

  • 😀

  • Awesome! I always take notes. I have a binder that I keep all my notes in so in the case of forgetting a step I can refer back to my notes. It’s super helpful.

  • Thanks. It’s true. Just try it yourself. You can do it. Every time you do it you get better at it. 😁

  • Thank you
