After 35 years of working in the Utility industry, I finally retired to set my roots in Tennessee.
My wife and I bought a small homestead property to allow us to grow our own produce and raise our own livestock so we can provide ourselves, our family, and our friends with healthy food, and to reduce our dependence on the now fragile supply chain.

We have only recently embarked on this adventure, so we are basically starting from scratch. Since we are nearly into the last quarter of 2022 as I write this, our initial efforts will be on getting our home set up the way we want it and becoming more self-sufficient. We will also be preparing our property for next year’s growing season. The only thing we’ve done so far to prepare is to buy seeds and some seed starting materials. Preparing the land and building infrastructure for chickens are the things we really need to be focused on in the next few months.

With regard to our home, it is currently an all-electric home. We are exploring alternatives to being grid-dependent, including a propane back-up generator system, propane and wood heating options, solar, and other things. We have been doing research in these areas, but still have a lot more research to do. I am hoping this site will benefit us greatly in that area.

We have properties in three states – Tennessee, Wyoming, and California. Our homestead property is the one in Tennessee. We have land in Wyoming that may become a small ranch someday, but for now it is just unimproved land. California is the place where I spent most of my life, and although it was a decent place to live long ago, I have wanted to leave for many years now. We still have family in California, and will hold on to the house we have there so we can stay there when we’re visiting, but I don’t plan to spend a lot of time there.
