Believe it or not my little Chinese tractor did what the D4 couldn’t. I put my homemade ripper on and it was able to break up ground the D4 couldn’t. Now I can push a layer off with the D4 then break it again and repeat until I hit solid rock or get where I want to be. I can only go down 4-8 inches at a time but that’s dang good progress considering!
I’ll try and get pics to post next time I go up.

Check your local craigslist and or hit local barn sales and markets you should find plenty

Older and lazier I went with solar water heating using a 1,000 watt element running on 48 volts in a standard 50 gallon home water heater.

I live just north of the Va NC line about 35 miles north of Kerr and Gaston and I am sure they are around since a friend sells both our piglets in the area

Trying to remember everything I learned. If I remember correctly you can cut the top / pollen head (I misspoke when I said tassels) off either type of your two types corn plants leaving the other to pollinate itself and the plants you took the top off of. Then you have your hybrid seed to plant the next year from the plant that had the tops cut off of. Typically they hand pollinate small batches and then bag the silks. Larger patches usually have a couple rows of pollinators and a few rows of plants being pollinated on the windward side. One thing you have to keep in mind is corn pollen can travel great distances and foul up your cross.
Check out some youtube videos on it I don’t remember being able to find a lot of info in print when I was doing research.

To make a hybrid you have to pollinate one plant with another. So yes the top has to be cut off one type before it can be pollinated by the other so the seed is truly hybrid. I looked in to trying this a couple years ago and decided I had better things to do with my time.

Of the two I think pigs, AGH American Guinea Hogs are about the easiest. No where near the trouble of larger breeds. They do take longer to grow out and you have to be careful of over feeding. You want them healthy not fat! Fat sows have a lot more trouble in giving birth.

So you have two strains you’re going to hybridize? Are you going to pollinate with the taller breed and cut the tassels on the shorter?

I have both and have had both for a number of years. AGH and Nubian X whatever X fainting. Both are hard to keep restrained they just like the challenge it would seem. But AHG can usually sustain themselves given the space and they have medium size litters. Goats are good but not as good and they usually have one or two offspring at a time. Selling piglets can be fairly profitable. More people here prefer to eat pork over goat. Both can be very handy when it comes to manually clearing land. Goats will eat a lot of stuff pigs even more so from what I’ve seen.

Good luck with it. Hope it works well for you.

Gotta watch rocket stoves and water heating. I built and used one for about 8 years. Biggest problem was not turning water to steam and blowing parts out! It would heat 50 gallons from ambient temps to 150 in about an hour with a half a five gallon bucket of split hardwoods.

I posted pics of one I started building a few years ago yesterday or the day before but now I can’t find them. Mine is 8×60 dug back in a hillside with the long side having southern exposure. I need to finish building the rear wall and get the rest of the earth up against it. Then build the south wall with old storm windows. Another labor intensive project but very few dollars. The frame and windows were all headed to the dump when I resourced them. Adding some old garden shots from the same time.

Moved a few more tons of earth today after slightly adjusting the right steering brake. This old dozer really needs new steering clutches and brakes, not sure how much longer I can limp it along without fixing it.

You might want to check around local it’s amazing what’s tucked around in small places. Save the money on shipping whenever you can. I see several places selling bagged grains from local sources on craigslist.

You could get a few females and a male or you can get a couple of each it depends on your end goal. I started out with five females and three males that were unrelated which gave me a large breeding circle.
