See how much of that stove top in the video is open and he has a 45W generator on there? Well imagine if you had designed a system for the purpose of making power and heat and used all that surface area. I see the potential for a good bit of power production without the loss of any valuable heat. I can see the possibility of making 500+ watts when your heating your home with a purpose built system! Now wouldn’t that be cool? Oh I can not wait to get my hands on some parts to make a prototype!

So I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking on the pole building design. Now that I know I can span the entire 40 feet I’m wondering if I should or not? One big problem for me is the lack of substantial footings. If the building 40×48 is just sitting on 10 posts that would mean the weight is going to be sitting on about 10 sqft and that just doesn’t feel like enough. What do you guys think? I have a 12 inch auger to drill the post holes with. I could possibly open the holes a little larger and maybe get 16 inches at the bottom. I am planning to set the posts on a poured concrete plug to spread the load a little larger than the bottom of the posts. This building is probably going to end up carrying some weight!
Does anyone know where I can get some poster board size 1/4 inch ruled graph paper for drawing plans?

Wood ash generally promotes the growth of things, it’s full of good stuff.

Thanks Tag I might get you to put me together with him later but a whole lot needs to happen first. The roof pitch is going to fall where it falls working with material on hand but 7:12 is close could end up 6 or 8 and the standard pipe adapters and such generally work fine since they have rubber lips. When I do this I will be building every piece I can onsite since I have a MAJOR lack of funds. The only way I will get away with this is since we live in an area that allows agricultural pole buildings to be built without permits or inspections and what they don’t know won’t hurt them. lmao! As slow as this project will happen I highly doubt anyone will even notice when it slowly changes from a barn type pole building in to an enclosed space. Since I will be working alone for the majority it will take 3 to 5 years I would guess!
BTW I live a good ways from anyone else and on a private road so not to many people will even know it’s here. Very few people even know we live here now and have for 15 years.

Sorry I forgot to specify floor trusses in the first post, I went back and did. The rafters will likely be 2x material. But I want to floors stiff as concrete! I also want them to be able to carry HEAVY LOADS!

Here’s a little something I found interesting about M18 batteries and their generic counterparts. After buying a M18 angle grinder I also decided to get some more batteries since I knew I need them using more tools at one time. I looked around and had sticker shock and decided to go with a pair of 6AH aftermarket batteries for the same price as one genuine M18 4ah battery. When they came in I was surprised they were the same size as my original 4ah batteries and weighed less! Well after owning them about a year I’ve realized they are more susceptible to dying in cold weather and don’t last quite as long as the original 4ah batteries do. They are also a LOT more difficult to get in and out of several of my tools and radio. So spend your hard earned dollars wisely.

Yeah I never seem to stop and look often enough to enjoy what I’ve done. For instance the other evening I went by the spot I was working on the pond earlier this fall. I wanted to see how much water was in it, can’t have it overflow the dam before it’s finished. Anyway as I pulled up to the pond a blue heron or a crane lifted off out of the pond. That was cool!

Having food put away is great and necessary but in my opinion to really cover the bases you also have to be raising food. Pretty much enough of everything can be ramped up from minimums in short order. So I’m not saying you have to be constantly growing enough of everything all the time. You do however need to be growing or in position to grow seasonally. Now animals / livestock really need to be on hand as well. Lets face it you aren’t likely to make it without a supply of meat. I have always kept animals to breed if nothing else. In other words I sell or give away most of their offspring. My livestock are true food insurance in my way of thinking.

I’m thankful to have been given the foresight to build this homestead away from the masses.

Well here ya go. I think it could be greatly improved upon if it were built in during construction. Not in to the stove but in to the house. Via floor heating using the cold water as coolant to make the TEG’s work better. Everything in a loop water out of the floor to the TEG’s for cooling then heated by the stove through the floor for radiant heat and back to the TEG’s to cool them before being reheated in the stove and looping again. Winter is our shortest solar days and additional power would be great!

Yeah and I’m afraid that just isn’t going to be enough. I think I’ll increase the size of the pads the posts sit on. The end walls posts will also carry a small part of the load but I want to be absolutly sure I have a good solid foundation.

More info is always better!

You can still buy the complete series many places. Pretty sure Amazon still has it too.

If you use to small a battery on a tool with large of a power draw it will quickly overheat and die. I generally use 4AH minimum

Daikon radishes work wonders with red and orange clay. They grow deep and bust the soil bringing nutrients up while letting water through. They are a cool season crop too so it doesn’t take up summer space.
