Wow! your yacons were much larger and more robust than mine. I’m wondering now if what I have is even yacon? mine was more bushy and the stalks weren’t as tall or strong. When they got to about 2′ tall they flopped over.

Couldn’t get the link to work.
I had really good growing yacon plants in large pots all Through Spring and Summer. They died back with cold weather, so I dumped the pots out to harvest the tubers and out of about 7 good sized plants in the pot I only found 1 tuber. Had the same result with topie tombos. The apios americana multiplied a bit, but not what I had hoped for. Looks like dioscoria and batatas are going to be the star tubers. Any idea what I did wrong? Thanks.

I put a shovel scoop in the barrel, molasses, maybe fish emulsion etc. and maybe some weeds or rotting veggie matter. I aerate mine with a little aquarium air pump. I’ve heard it works better if it’s anaerobic, but I still do it. I let it brew for a week or so and use it as a root drench. The plants love it. I do it maybe every other month in the growing season. If possible, use rainwater, it’s the best! And if someone pees into the barrel, so much the better!

I planted several elderberries maybe 5 years ago. They have grown like crazy and bloomed, but never matured fruit. Do they just take a while to produce or might I have a pollination or mineral issue? Thanks.

The first time I grew them the wild hogs dug them up after they finished off our sugar cane. The second time I planted them in a molasses bucket and they came up but died. Maybe I’ll try them again.

Do you have a Ful o Pep near you? They are based in San Antonio and have a location in DeWitt county. There are other independent feed stores around. Just do a search.

I’ve been using 20% vinegar for weed control. I’ll apply it around the elderberries. I’m in 9a. I have lots of dioscoria, katuk, surinam cherries and lots of other things.

I have a clump of elderberries with probably 20 plants within 15 square feet. They are on irrigation. Yo mentioned PH. That may be the problem. Our soil is somewhat alkaline. I’ll try some sulphur on them. I saw in another post yo have subtropicals like cassava and other things. We should compare and swap some starts in another month. I have been collecting subtropicals for years.

They were stored inside our house, so stable temperatre. No bugs. They were just too dried out. They wouldn’t soften up in cooking. Even with baking soda added.
I think my best solution is to grow them. I need to figure out what beans/peas grow best here. Thanks, D

Once we figure out the venue we could post lists of what we have and what we want.

I have been wanting to try vacuum sealing. Maybe I’ll get the machine and bags. South Texas here. Almost as humid.
