Raincoats!
Posted by Maytag on April 7, 2023 at 9:36 pmAnyone have recommendations for full-length (like below knees) rain coats? Brands or shops or both. Long length is key here; I already have good rain coats that are closer to waist-length. I can grab ponchos or other stuff for cheap a number of places, but looking for something more substantial that will last a while and not tear as soon as a twig catches it.

You can not beat a good oilskin Duster
This price can be beat I’d expect but these are great coats for foul weather chores.

Yeah I know I try and avoid china made where and when I can but sometimes you just gotta do it and in over ten years these coats haven’t let me down. I just got my second one last year. WARNING they run small especially in the shoulders. Then again I have stupid wide shoulders!

I was looking at the sizing chart. I think the S would be a good fit on me. Honestly, the XS would probably fit me fine (shoulders/chest) but it’s a little short for me. I don’t need it touching the ground but XS would only hit around my knees. Then again, maybe it would be good to get the M so there’s room around the chest to toss it over layers in the winter?
Assuming the measurement is from the top of the collar, not from the shoulders. The sizing chart isn’t clear on what point the length measurement is made top-side.

If you tell me your build I’ll give you an idea. But to give you an idea I’m 6 ft 200ish lbs and an XL is small on me my daughter is 5’6″ and 150 and a large just big enough to get a light coat / heavy shirt under for her.

I’m a few inches taller than your daughter and a few pounds lighter. Maybe I should get something bigger than Small, then, if I were to get one from Outback 🤔

A medium or large would likely work but I’d stay away from small unless you’re extremely thin. They also have straps to strap the coat to your thighs if it’s really storming & windy.

I’m still amazed at the prices of these things, but some looking around last night at other brand names indicates these aren’t major outliers. Yes, you can get cheaper ones, but they look much thinner, have bad reviews, have different fits, won’t close up on the back (for when you don’t need to straddle something), and don’t have hoods. So while the sticker shock isn’t gone, maybe these aren’t such a bad deal, assuming the will last a while. You said you replaced one after about 10 years? That doesn’t sound too bad.

There was nothing wrong with the old one other than my daughter wanted it and it was honestly to small for me. So she stole it and I got a new one. Win win. lol It was a large and I just could get it on but I used it for chores in bad weather for ten or so years and it still looks about new. Neither of mine have a hood, which I think you mentioned.

BTW Thought it germain to mention I’ve been wearing their oilskin hats for over 20 years. They work well and last a few years.

On the boat, I wear Grundens or Helly Hansen, But around the house, or out in the rain I have an old oilskin duster just like previous post. Its probably 30 years old, but does not get regular use (it did for a few years) with care, its still going strong with zero defects or problems. Its been through the woods on hunts several times, brush and briars are no problem

Hm, thanks, I’ll keep something like this in mind if I decide to go for a two-piece setup 👍
