I live in zone 5. Last year I planted both borage and comfrey from seed stated indoors from the same seed company mentioned in other comments. Borage popped up all over my garden this year. It’s a great companion plant and pollinator attractor and medicinal, so I was happy to replant all the free borage plants I’ve gotten this year. The comfrey was small the first year, but came back in force this year. My plants were 18-24” tall by 12-18” round. I have raised beds and could not give up that kind of space so I pulled them and relocated them near the apple trees. It was not easy, the roots were over 1” thick and very deep. I use the primarily for compost teas for my high nitrogen feeders. New comfrey still pops up in my raised beds, so I’m constantly transplanting the comfrey. I love both plants and wouldn’t part with either, but knowing what I know now, I’d find a permanent home for the comfrey instead of using it as a companion plant. The bees love the comfrey and it starts blooming around April here and keeps blooming through September.
