I have goats too. I started off with 2 Anglo-nubian(guess) does and a lamancha buck. So I have a couple short eared does from his blood line. I replaced the buck with a kinder buck a few years later and another kinder buck this past year.

Been pretty happy with the kinder genetics for my property and wanting a little more meat on the animals.

Right now I have about 15 goats.

4 1 year old Wethers that need to go to a freezer

And a couple you g females if anyone is looking.

I have trash on my property from the previous owner, too. I free range my goats and they manage to find things to eat that are much more palatable than trash. 😜 Actually, the idea that goats will eat anything is an old wives tale. They are pickier than that.

There are a wide range of goat breeds. But really, any one can be milked or butchered. Just some have better milk production, or more muscular than others. What I love about my Kikos is that they have a good reach for clearing brush, and yet are still a managable size.

Good to know trash isn’t as big an issue as I feared. I will still clean it up, of course, but I feel better about not waiting until it’s perfect. Because (we all know) if you wait for conditions to be perfect, nothing will ever get done.

Just general trash isn’t a problem, but in my old place I had a fence covered with corrugated roofing, and they can and probably will cut themselves on stuff like that. Also, horrible, I had some rebar sticking up in one part of the yard and a doe caught her udder on it and ripped it real badly. So watch out for those kinds of hazardous things.

I have Nigerian Dwarf Dairy goats. They are awesome! I love them so much!

You could fence off an area that has been cleaned and expand as you get more areas ready.

I took on a property that had a lot of trash left behind. I feel like I have combed through every inch of it,

but the location was worth it! Just use wisdom on what type of things are in the soil, goats are great at

getting into anything : ) …. but setting up for them a safe area is well worth the blessings they bring.

Thank you for the encouragement! I’m just finishing a perimeter fence and the area I enclosed is clean on one side, disgustingly trashed on the other. I figured on beginning goat pens on the clean side first. Just makes sense.

I raised Nigerian Dwarf goats for over 20 years. We started out with two for our kids’ 4H project. At one time we had about 25 does and 5 bucks. They are really good milkers, I’ve had several just short of a gallon a day. I’ve made cheese, still make soap, we drank it, raised a calf and a little buckskin colt with it…and raised three kids on it (two legged kids). We are expecting probably our last litter of kids in May. Kind of sad, but looking forward to retirement.

We also had boer goats for meat. Goats are a lot of fun and entertainment!

I had goats, but I sold them before I moved. I don’t have any for now, but I do plan on getting goats again, once I’m set up better for it. I had some alpine, and a mix of mixed goats. They were milk, meat, brush control and entertainment. TA friend of mine has quite a few goats and I buy goat milk and bucks for meat from her, and we talk about goats a lot. Glad when I can have a little herd again!

We moved from South Central NM a year ago….Tularosa (the Alamogordo area). We loved the area! We are now back to SE Kansas, but I sure miss the desert.

Tularosa is a lovely little town. I understand why you would miss it.
