Starting Onions from Seed

Last year I tried starting onions for the first time. They were successful and beautiful at the beginning, then their growth really slowed and really just stopped. I had fertilized them with liquid kelp. I also ended up with fungus gnat issues on my onion starts. I’m in zone 5, so I really have to start them indoors (very soon, as a matter of fact). I’d appreciate any onion-starting advice you can throw my way!

Good luck with your onions! I would love to compare notes around planting time – maybe we can share what worked (or didn’t work) and help each other perfect the process. 🙂

I believe I got a viral infection last year so lost quite a few onions but still have 3 onions left. Will be sad when I have to go buy a bag of onions soon. Are you growing the right onion for your location? Haven’t really had a problem growing them. Check soil pH, fertilize as needed, weed around the bulbs.

I know that familiar sadness of running out of storage onions! Yes, we are growing long day here in WI. I ended up buying starts last year because my own starts were unsuccessful. Once they were in the ground, they did fabulous. I think for some reason I failed at keeping my homegrown starts healthy.

I’ll keep you posted. Another source of really helpful info that helps me is 1870 Homestead

& MI garden although they are different zones .They both have great info on how & when to trim the tops & spoon the soil.

.This is my First year trying seeds!

    Good luck
